"Always notice whatever is happening in the background." The acclaimed producer and composer discusses the art of meaningful listening and his latest LP, Silencio.

Moritz von Oswald's legacy as one of the trailblazers of contemporary techno precedes him. The artist's initial claim to fame was his involvement in the duo Basic Channel with Mark Ernestus, a project that formed the dub techno canon in the '90s and is still a primary reference point for many, if not most, modern producers. He was also at the helm of the famous cutting and pressing plant Dubplates and Mastering in Berlin, which has become a home for countless artists over the years.

But on this occasion, Oswald sat down to discuss a more recent project: his LP Silencio on Tresor Records, which came out in November. He talked with RA's senior producer, Chloe Lula, about his lifelong love of  jazz, tapestry, French film, Southern Italian opera and music from Central Asia. He also reflects on his production process—an endless exploration of drama and dynamics. Oswald is fascinated with reducing sound to its most basic elements and broadening the capacity of what the ear can perceive. Most importantly, he's a critical listener, and in the final moments of the episode, he imparts wisdom on how he's learned to keep a conscious ear open to the world around him. This edition of The Bunker podcast comes from our old friend @blacklauren, recorded live at The Bunker at Good Room in July 2022, when he opened for DJ Nobu and Wata Igarashi. Mastered by @russellelbutler.

artist statement: "At some point during the late months of 2013, a close friend at the time sent me a podcast mix to listen to from a young Japanese DJ who was completely unknown to me at the time - @wata Igarashi. This same friend coincidentally took me to my first Bunker party a few months prior & I became a regular attendee from that night onwards for many years. 

In the early spring of 2015, my collaborative partner and I, collectively known as The Long Count Cycle, were asked to do a podcast mix for The Bunker as well as an invitation to play the party following it’s release. For us, this was monumental and just when we thought things couldn’t get any better, we were invited to play Rural festival and Dommune in Japan that summer based on our mix. 

One of the artists on the lineup was Wata Igarashi. I was excited for many reasons but also because I now had the opportunity to tell him in person how phenomenal I thought his mix was. We spent quite a bit of time together during that trip and became friends. Additionally, I gained a new perspective on techno seeing how he performed and the sonic palette necessary for creating states of psychedelia and euphoria. 

In the years following, we would cross paths several times at Nowadays, Good Room & Sustain Release. Each time, I left with a deeper understanding of the music and my place within it. So when I was invited to open for him and the exceptional & exemplary @djnobu_bitta, there was a visceral sense of validation in being entrusted to set the tone for what was to come that night. A great friend of Monument who delivered an incredible closing set at our first ever Monument City Festival in 2023, we couldn’t be happier to be marking the occasion with him. 

For this very special mix Nobu presents a stunning introspective excursion through electronica and deeper shades to celebrate the two milestones.
