In the beginning of 2016 female:pressure launched an awareness and solidarity campaign for the cantons of #Rojava (located in northern Syria), where women participate on all levels of decision making and building a new society from scratch, with built-in social, racial and ethnic justice, religious freedom, ecological principles and gender equality.

With a series of music, media and sound art to listen, dance and fight to, we send our love and strength to these women and spread a positive message in support of their efforts.

French sound artist, activist and musician Gaël Segalen aka IhearU has a very diverse experience in sound and is focused on poly-listening, dissonance and new music, as well as to create people’s encounters in improvisation spaces. She believes all the noises she has collected or manipulated, can coexist in one inclusive spirit, here and now, and transposes the complexity of the world into electroacoustic and polyrhythmic soundscapes, bruitisme and DFR (Danceable Field Recording) compositions. The reconciliation of all the noises she has collected from her travels is manipulated in the studio, in one inclusive spirit, here and now.

Karen Werner is a U.S. radio producer and sociologist. Her radio work has been commissioned by and broadcast on the Australian Broadcast Corporation shows Earshot, Radiotonic, and Soundproof. Karen’s audio work has also been played at Kinokophone's sound cinema events at Lincoln Center in NYC and at the Deep Listening Festival in Troy, New York. From 2014-2016 she received a Hemera Fellowship for artists with a Buddhist practice. Karen’s 2016 radio documentary, “Laws of Lost and Found Objects” won the 2016 Grand Prix Marulic. In Fall 2016, she was artist-in-residence at studio das weisse haus in Vienna, Austria, producing a radio series called Strange Radio. Karen is on the faculty at Goddard College in Plainfield, Vermont.

Meira Asher’s work challenges accepted conventions of practice and genre, even within the supposed open-minded circles of the Avantgarde. A composer, performer and Human Rights activist, she freely oscillates between, through and beyond the fields of Sound art and Radio art. In the past 20 years her artistic practice has been focusing on in-depth and long- term projects, and she has been working assiduously, amassing many different projects in different veins. She is the producer of the independent Radioart show radioart106 since 2014 and a former lecturer at Haifa university's Art School (2012-22). Her works were released on Crammed, Sub Rosa, Auditorium, Raash Records and Ultima Ratio labels, but mostly independent through her own platforms. Her recent works include TANSIKتنسيق for Radio Reina Sofia Madrid, a Hebrew version of Antonin Artaud’s radio essay Pour en finir avec le jugement de Dieu and Sonic Voyage of Resistance for Radio Art Zone.

Writer Angela Dimitrakaki and theorist Antonia Majaca were invited by visual artist Sanja Iveković to animate her Monument to Revolution installed in Athens in the context of Documenta 14. The original monument in Berlin (in memory of Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht) was destroyed by the Nazis. The new monument is set symbolically in Athens where the struggle against capitalism is rife. Thirty international feminist contributors, individuals or collectives, were asked to send a short recording on fascism and the importance of feminist struggle against it. The multi-lingual collection of recordings is scored by sound sculptor AGF.

radio continental drift is a mobile radio drama project focusing on spoken word, “dramatic field-recordings”, narratives usually produced before/ during/ after skills-training workshops or in the context of long-term collective audio media projects such as the NO-GO-ZONES project and the DURBAN SINGS audio media & oral history project. 

The work of radio continental drift takes place on the intersection of sound art, radio drama, media activism, acoustic education and literacy, oral history, community radio and digital communities. At each point of its journey, a project seeks creative and collective ways to exploit the opportunities of digital media for transmitting a story together with the toolbox and infrastructure of its production – be it locally, in collective media projects, or on-line for a global audience. The resulting compositions, radio dramas, trailers and mixes of radio continental drift invite a listener in to a space where “I can hear myself listening”... an awareness about listening as an imaginative, productive and creative act.
