A French wildlife conservation association, TAKH, has devoted the past 30 years to bring an endangered species of horses from Mongolia back to its endemic habitat on the Mongolian steppes.
The Przewalski horse or Takhi as they are known in Mongolia are the only truly wild horse species in the world.
By the 1960s, they ceased to exist in the wild and the only surviving species were to be found in zoos across Europe.
In 1990, Claudia Feh, a wildlife biologist, founded TAKH with the aim to save the Przewalski horses.
Today, 29 live in semi-captivity in Le Villaret conservation site in the southern Cévennes region of France.
And 89 roam wildly on the Seer release site in the western region of Khomyn Tal in Mongolia.
RFI's Zeenat Hansrod spoke to Laurent Tatin, the science and conservation programmes manager of TAKH in France and Munkhbat Tserendorj, executive director of Khomyn Talyn Takhi in Mongolia.
