Deep within the old-growth wood, a primal ancestor stirred from its millennia-long slumber. Long adrift within the spiritual realms while its body remained in the stasis of hibernation, the beast returned only begrudgingly to corporeal form in response to the external stimuli that had roused it. As it did so, it slowly shook off the centuries of stalagmites that had formed upon its hide as it had dwelt in the cave that was its home, a once silent place wherein the only sound had come from the gentle drip of water off of the cave’s limestone walls. As the BEHEMOTH awakened,- however, it noticed the soundscape had changed drastically. A thrum, hum, and buzz could be heard echoing throughout the earth, and it was the search for the source of these sounds that dragged the beast reluctantly from the mouth of its underground dwelling.

As the BEHEMOTH emerged, it noted a colossal shift in the wood’s primal energies. So much had disappeared over its long period of hibernation, replaced by cold metal and unnatural stone structures that reverberated not with the warmth of life. Indeed, the cave that had once held the heart of the forest, at the entrance to which the beast now stood, was no more so at its geographic center than the new years saplings had once been. Enraged by this loss of its rightful hunting grounds, the beast bellowed out a mighty roar in warning to whatever forces had defiled such once-hallowed grounds. Slamming its paws into the earth, the beast brought summoned forth a shockwave that roiled through the rock before it, traveling as an unseen assault on the structures that lay below. Only a few seconds later the horizon resounded with a crack that echoed through the air, and the BEHEMOTH watched with joy as one of the nearby structures collapsed into a pile of stone and steel. As it lumbered forwards to join the fray of this destruction, it had but one thought on its mind. It would make this sacred place silent once more.

AKOV returns to EATBRAIN with his latest 4-track EP, BEHEMOTH, which brings to bear a selection of sonic sequences that are anything but what their title suggests as they bombard the ears of the EATBRAIN horde. “Rapido…Rapido…Rapido…”. These were the words that echoed throughout the aluminum-clad walls of a vast underground complex populated almost entirely by beings made of circuitry and wires that spoke not in response to the utterances of the installation’s sole human inhabitant. Instead, the synthetic lifeforms went about their tasks unperturbed by the odd sounds that emanated from within the deepest portions of the laboratory wherein lurked a singular organic mind which lead the project with a fervor that could only be born from the human psyche.

“There simply must be a way to break through the barrier,” came the next set of words from within, this time contained within a full sentence. The robots noticed not, continuing about their tasks as the great particle accelerator within began to thrum with a cold electric life all of its own. Slowly, the accelerator began to draw power not only from the facility’s reserves but from the very kinetic energy of the planet’s rotation itself, a colossal source of energy yet untapped in this way for fear of the unforeseen consequences that might lay beyond its use. The machine glowed with a blue heat for a moment under the influx of all of this power, which amassed itself behind a single particle locked in stasis at absolute zero within the ammunition chamber.

“RAPIDO!” came one final shout alongside the clanging of a metallic switch being thrown with gusto as the hypothermic lock on that singular particle was dispelled. In an instant, the energy buildup behind that particle was released, sending the minuscule speck of matter rocketing through the universe at faster than light speeds that set it tearing through the fabric of space-time as it traveled.

BURR OAK mark a monolithic moment in their sonic journey with the release of their debut album, SOMEWHERE WE BELONG, which stands as the crown jewel of the two member’s careers as solo artists and as a duo alike. Packed with a mammoth 18 tracks that span the full breadth of the Neurofunk genre, SOMEWHERE WE BELONG sees BURR OAK deliver a definitive work set to cement itself well within the history of the genre.

BURR OAK’s own story is mirrored in the stories of their twin cowboy personas, Scruggs and Sonny Jim, whose escapades are expressed throughout the album’s tracklist and the tales that accompany it. Much like these two inseparable wanderers, BURR OAK’s two members, Niko and Julien, began their careers as solo artists before joining together to embark on their shared quest as BURR OAK. Longtime fans of Neurofunk will recognize each by their many other monikers. Niko has produced and performed variously as a member of the French Drum & Bass trio Signs, as half of the duo Cecil Hotel, and under his solo alias Opsen throughout his long career devoted to the pursuit of Drum & Bass’ most technical edge. By contrast, Julien’s journey under his solo alias The Clamps has seen him champion both cinematic soundscapes and the genre’s most extreme fringes, merging beauty and brutality within his music in equal measure. 
If this wasn’t a colorful palette of a career enough, they are also running another project with the also Toulouse based SKS – “Forum” which is also a heavyweight drum and bass project with a jungle/rave/oldschool twist. And to add a cherry on the top Julien runs Third Colony with Yan, an extravagant IDM/downtempo project.

As BURR OAK, these two prolific artists intertwine their sounds in an inexorable musical lattice, presenting a unified sonic profile that is more than the sum of its parts. This stylistic synergy thrives amidst SOMEWHERE WE BELONG, which details the story of BURR OAK both in fiction and as the producers they are today. The album’s title speaks to this, not only for the duo’s cowboy characters but for Niko & Julien as well. Beneath the branches of the BURR OAK, these titans of Neurofunk have truly found somewhere they belong.

Amidst the decaying upholstery of a once-plush armchair sat a great mass of feline flesh, possessed of a hyperintelligent mind and prodigiously “chonky” in its size but utterly absorbed within the flickering lights of a cell phone device that it held absentmindedly in a single paw. Surrounding the chair lay scattered pieces of broken glass, torn carpet, and a blown-out window through which howled a distant wind. The howling wind reminded the feline of the howls of his old nemesis, canine creatures which he hoped would no longer roam the recently desolated streets of the ruined city that surrounded his home. Still, though, the gigantic cat looked up from his screen, eyes and ears flitting around the room as he assessed frantically whether one of these infernal creatures had survived the fireball that had enveloped the city mere moments ago.

After moments had passed, the cat purred a contented sigh, gazing over the ruins of the city that lay across the threshold of the once grand window that now framed his view of the world. Briefly, he regretted that he now needed to feed himself, owing to the unfortunate deaths of the humanoid servants that had once doted upon him with such constancy. Of course, they could still serve him once more as a fine meal themselves in the days to come, but the feline still thought of them fondly. He knew not why he had survived when so many others had perished, nor what stroke of luck had blessed him with his remarkably human intelligence, but it mattered not. The world had just been shattered, but as his nametag clinked gently in the breeze, the cat was not perturbed. It was quiet, he was entertained, and he had finally claimed the best chair in the house for himself. All beyond this room could burn, but in the dismal milieu of the scene that surrounded him, the cat was quite comfy. 

One of EATBRAIN’s most lauded horde leaders, MNDSCP, returns to the label with his latest EP, EDGE OF DISASTER, featuring four furious sonic sequences bristling with bassweight and irrefutably describable by the “chonky” descriptor shared by the feline figure within the EP’s artwork.

Last year we did a bootleg of a classic rave track from Underworld, Born Slippy, which was used in the movie Trainspotting.
We grew up with this classic song in the 90s, and we had a lot of emotions working on it. After months of playing it at parties, it now becomes yours. We hope you like our Drum & Bass revision.
