One foot in dubby, stripped back, Malmö-influenced minimal house, the other in percussive, melodic, Nairobi-influenced deep house. That’s the best way to describe Raj el Rey’s music - with his personal journey and influences shining all the way through.

Having been exposed to electronic music primarily as a raver in Nairobi's growing electronic music scene around 2010, his love for the pulsing 4×4 beats, his keen ear and appreciation for underground music cuts and his growing musical collection soon lead to him making a switch from clubber to DJ. Stepping behind the decks at numerous parties and venues across the city, he
soon became known for his unrelenting groovy selections, sourced through his passion to dig and uncover deep, quirky, and more experimental tracks. 

Now based in Malmö since 2016, Raj continues to make and play music that blends elements from house, dub, disco and techno, applying his experience as
a selector and appreciator of electronic music into crafting sounds that reflect his different influences and background - all the while focusing on a distinct deep underground selection.  In this mix we jump into a journey through some of the style of tunes that Raj like to listen to, outside of what he normally play out at gigs. Starting out with some melodic, soulful chillstep, progressing through more wobbly bass lines, a sprinkling of reggae dub, and finishing off with some liquid drum and bass.

Episode 49 is here, this time we present Malmö based Shin Di. Shin Di is an alias of Raj Shindi, also known as Raj el Rey. He’s been involved in electronic music since around 2010, as a raver, DJ, promoter, and more recently, producer and label co-head at https://soundcloud.com/minimal-with-love.

As Shin Di, Raj’s focus is on dubby, dusty, minimalistic soundscapes. For this mix, we start off in the realm of dub techno - progressing into some minimal grooves and atmospheric techno through the hour. Enjoy the journey.


Interview with Shin Di:


Q: What made you start DJing? 
A: It all started in my teens with DJ Decks software. Started messing around and mixing tunes together that I would then listen to while gaming/reading - I wanted to have a continuous mix of tunes that I liked, instead of the in-game stuff, or listening to an album one track at a time. I fell in love with the art of DJing from there. I learnt how to use hardware on a dusty pair of CDJ 1000MK2s and a DJM 600 from a local resident DJ at a club in Nairobi just before I turned 18, started to play a few sets here and there, and it took off from there.


Q: Describe your style in three words. 
A: Atmospheric, emotive, and hypnotic.


Q: Your best set in 2023/2024? 
A: Module in Copenhagen in Jan 2024 - I played some groovy house on the Kiosk floor during a takeover night hosted by my friends at Tenebris Occulum. I was supposed to play 3-6am, but the vibe was so good that I ended up playing until 9am - magical night/morning.


Q: Your favorite track right now? 
A: The opening track on this mix, Nikosf. - Autumn Tree


Q: A track you never get tired of? 
A: Unknown Artist - Untitled (Lukea Edit). It’s a great edit of Micky Green - Oh!, such a fantastic tune. 


Q: Where can one find the best falafel in Malmö? 
A: Mr. Falafel at Nobelvägen - standard order is alla grönsäker, blandadsås - and ask for the granatäpplesås on it as well. Trust me. 


Q:  A Malmö DJ you want to highlight? 
A: Oli Neate - great selections and technical skills, and so versatile. One of my favourite DJs to go b2b with, we’ve never done any prep but it has always been a great vibe playing off each other. We once did 9 hours b2b at Plan B in summer 2023, that was special! https://soundcloud.com/olineate
