Our next podcast comes from 2020 Vision Label Boss, Ralph Lawson. We're releasing this exclusive prior to 2020’s Content World Tour arriving in Leeds on the 29th March featuring Greg Wilson, Crazy P and Ralph. This tour celebrates 20 years of 2020 Vision and the release of “Content”. 

We had Ralph play at Mint Warehouse early last year, and he showed everyone why he’s played a pioneering role in electronic underground dance music for the past two decades. His 2020 Vision Recordings have created a vibrant trail of releases, making it one of the best-loved and most respected imprints in the industry. He currently holds residencies at Back To Basics, We Love Space and Barcelona’s The Loft as well as making regular appearances at Berlin’s Watergate and London’s Fabric.

It had been a while since we'd thrown a 2020Vision Day / Night party in London. So the pressure was on.  Would people still remember us ?  Would the notorius English weather be kind to us ?  Could we still pull it off ?  

The answer to all these questions thankfully was yes.  

It had been raining hard for a week before the party but the skies cleared and the sun came out on Sunday morning of May 25th.  A beautiful crowd of people turned up at iCan studios in Hackney Wick, East London for the day session as Kag Katumba, The Reflex and Psychemagik took control of  the decks.

This mix was recorded live from my closing set at sunset. I've always loved that transition between day and night.  As the light fades your ears take over from your eyes and people tune in more closely to the music.  

The party continued until the sun came up again with Citizen,  PBR Streetgang and Greg Wilson in the main room with the Loco Vision cubes.  

Thanks to everyone who came to share the experience and LWE for their superb production.  

Next stop is Sonar Lab as the sun comes up over Sonar Festival on June 14/15th.

Our 112th podcast comes from a DJ that holds the records for the longest ever residency in recent underground electronic music. Ralph Lawson, a Leeds based DJ, kicked off his career and played the very first record in the legendary British club “Back to Basics” where to this date, he withholds a residency. In his recent history, Ralph played and got accredited in some of the world’s most respected night clubs around the world, where he obtained esteemed residencies among clubs such as Space Ibiza, Barcelona’s Loft and Berlin’s Watergate club. Ralph caught the Acid bug back in 1988 as he shifted from London to England’s house mecca of Leeds, where he later started his infamous 2020 Vision record label in 1994.

I took time off from playing music but coming back up for air with another opportunity to close out Sunset Campout--the best party in the world--with friends and family meant everything to me. Feels appropriate to post this one on Thanksgiving as I couldn't be more grateful to have all you nice people in my life. As always, a huge thank you to Solar and Galen for having me back and all of the Campout team for making it happen. You Don't Have Time

The original version of Chihiro 61298 is one of the highlights of the System 7 Phoenix album. A great collaboration with Sebastian Mullaert and Marcus Henriksson (Son Kite/Minilogue) they provide both their electronic jazzy element (Minilogue) and their deep techno-trance element (Son Kite). The Robita Bells Mix is a remix made by Steve and Miquette that is a bit more dreamy-ambient but still with the powerful pulsating beats, and has appeared as a bonus track with some versions of the album.

How this track fits into the Phoenix story?

In what is one of the darkest Phoenix stories – “Resurrection” – Osamu Tezuka works with the intriguing question that preoccupies many science-fiction writers:- can robots have a soul and if so how is that soul formed? Leon is medically reconstructed by futuristic techniques after a horrific accident but feels more in common with robots than with humans and falls deeply in love with the humble secretary robot Chihiro 61298, who he sees as a beautiful woman. Eventually the two are united as one after death, remaining in existence as the soul of the large and friendly robot Robita, who becomes one of the emblematic characters of the whole Phoenix series. This is a story of deep and dark emotions with the magical guidance of the Phoenix hovering in the background.
