BACK TO BASICS

DJ and producer, Terry Farley heads back to the 'second summer of love' and celebrates some of the biggest Acid House tracks, 25 years on.

Along with Andrew Weatherall, the duo started the now notorious Boy's Own fanzine in 1986, which commented on the slang, the parties, the tunes and the humour of the acid house days, and which also lead to the creation of the label Junior Boys Own. This imprint specialised in dance music and put out records by Orbital and Dig Your Own Hole by The Chemical Brothers, which celebrates 15 years this year.

Terry began making productions with Andy Weatherall, Hugo Nicholson and Pete Heller under the name Bocca Juniors. He later teamed up with Pete Heller and has gone on to re-mix many of the world's leading artists and singers: everyone from U2 to New Order; to the Happy Mondays and Primal Scream at the height of Balearica. He has also produced Kylie Minogue, The Farm and M People.

About the cd:
So everyone should know by now that I was a massive fan of Sanchez in the late 90's. And it's around 2001/2 that he supposedly started playing 'darker'. We all know how that turned out (sadly!). This is a free disc from MixMag which brilliant shows the slamming soul and energy he brings and a mix which has had quite a few requests on this page despite it being free. (Which is unusual for a giveaway disc!).

So on that note, thanks for such a belter Mixmag, you can pick it up on discogs for only 50p, now that is a bargain. So turn up it, and enjoy the mix.

Claudio Coccoluto, an Italian DJ who is criminally underrated in my opinion.  This set was recorded live at the seminal Back To Basics club night in Leeds in 1995.  Check the double vinyl copies and cutting of beats in this terrific set.  Dark garage, pounding tribal, just great stuff from Coccoluto.

I first heard about Miles and Elliot from when Garry and Keiron booked them to play in Sunderland for their Ward 10 parties, which if you went to or heard of will understand that it was house music of the very highest calibre.

About the CD:
002 of the Classic Mix CD Series and yet another absolute stand out classic. After getting into house at around 15, I guess my only source of info was Danny Rampling's seminal LGDP (Love Groove Dance Party) Saturday nights on Radio 1. However I can't remember Carter getting much coverage on there, yet he, much like Danny Tenaglia seemed to have a level of legend unlike most. This CD cemented my love of house music with an all might smash in the face. The tempo, the bass, the disco, the filters, and fucked up vocals... this was heavyweight. Nothing could compete at the time. I'll always remember driving to college with my 2 nerdy class mates and insisting they played this CD in the car. I'm raving in the back and they are like "What the fuck is this shit, turn it down!". It's with immense pleasure that DJ's like Sneak and Carter seem to be booking all the massive clubs and parties again. I'm not so keen on the whole 'I'm a House Gangster' vibe... but this is as bad as it gets.

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.
