The follow up to 2019's Star Creature x Mirlaqi Systeme debut which despite being 5 years old saw a big uptick this year after being championed by Green Velvet both in his life sets and via his official Spotify Track ID playlist. This lead to Geneva's Mirlaqi paying a visit to Star Creature's HQ in Chicago during the early summer of 2024. Label-head Tim Zawada and Mirlaqi aka Timour Nigolian spent a few days chopping it up about music, hitting record stores, club nights, loft parties as well as some crucial beach-side studio link ups with a few Chicago and Detroit players.

Ramrock Blue Records are beyond thrilled to be welcoming the genius Ercons and ridiculously talented vocalist, Laura Vane with their single, ‘Energy’. This is one of those very rare matches made in musical heaven. 

DJ, presenter and podcaster, Eamon Murtagh (aka Blackwax) first brought the Ercons to my attention after they had released their epic, vinyl only ‘Planet Fantastique’ [Ed. go and buy it before all copies are gone]. I can’t begin to tell you how completely blown away I was by the quality of the album and its jazz sensibilities. I approached Phil and Darren and asked if I could license the LP for digital only and the answer was ‘yes’. The more I listened to ‘Planet Fantastique’, the more I realised that it was cramped full of jazzy, soulful numbers that were screaming to be heard by a wider audience, including an exquisite cover of Ronnie Foster’s 1972 jazz masterpiece ‘Mystic Brew’. However, the jump out track was ‘Energy’ with its powerhouse soul vocals, slungback beats and blistering Isley Brother’ish guitar solo – every box was ticked. The vocalist’s name was Laura Vane – I’d been aware of Laura since her outings with the Vipertones in the early’ish noughties and since then she’s been releasing a steady stream of outstandingly soulful material plus collaborations across different genres with the likes of The Streets, MJ Cole and Flevans. 

Phil Williams, one half of the Ercons, takes up the narrative:
“Energy was the first track that Laura worked on for the Ercons. We were just coming out of the pandemic and Laura was writing about how she had a renewed energy after so many months of being locked down. My brother, Darren lives in Australia, and once restrictions were lifted, he took one of the first available flights to the UK after lockdown and we recorded the guitar parts….and the rest is history.”

The Ercons are producer and keyboard player, Philip Williams who has teamed up with bass player, Darren Banton who, together, explore space funk, hip hop and soul. Don’t forget to check out their super limited vinyl LP, ‘Planet Fantastique’ ft. ‘Energy’. Thank me later.
