In April 2014, during the first Kagyu Monlam in Paris (France), the very venerable Ringu Tulku Rinpoche taught about the short but profound text written by Langri Tangpa (1054-1123), a well known Kadampa master born in Central Tibet.

Dudjom Tersar Ngondro: Calling The Lama From Afar

As a young boy Ringu Tulku Rinpoche, along with his family, fled Tibet. Tied to his horse so he wouldn't fall off when he slept, he made it to India. Today, 60 years later, he is a regular visitor to Ireland, teaching Buddhism and meditation. 

He tells Roísín about his unusual life and times, his friendship with the Dalai Lama, the 'strange and special' belief in reincarnation and why he refers to himself as 'the lazy lama'.

This was composed in a cave near Ngulchu Rinchen by the monk Tokme, a teacher of scripture and reasoning, for his own and others’ benefit.

Gyalsé Ngulchu Tokmé (Tib. རྒྱལ་སྲས་དངུལ་ཆུ་ཐོགས་མེད་, Wyl. rgyal sras dngul chu thogs med) or Tokmé Zangpo (ཐོགས་མེད་བཟང་པོ་, Wyl. thogs med bzang po) (1297-1371), was born in Puljung, south west of the great Sakya Monastery. He was born in the Wood Sheep year of the fifth sexagenary cycle. An extremely learned scholar, he studied an infinite number of teachings from all traditions. His every instant was devoted to the Dharma which he spread through composition, teaching and debate.
He could teach with total confidence on any subject or text. Also, he was able fully to take upon himself the suffering of others and to give them his wellbeing, and without any expectation as to the result, he was extremely generous to all, particularly the poor, the destitute and the suffering. He met buddhas and deities such as Avalokiteshvara and Tara face to face. He taught many of the greatest teachers of his time in Central Tibet, such as Khenchen Lochen Changchup Tsemo (1303-1380), Butön Rinchen Drup (1290-1364), great Sakya masters and so on. He passed away at the age of 74 amidst wondrous signs of realization.

At the request of Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche, Ringu Tulku has agreed to speak at Rangjung Yeshe Institute on a theme which he himself has embodied for many years: the art of combining the study and practice of Buddhism in an optimal and synergistic way.
Ringu Tulku Rinpoche is a Tibetan Buddhist Master of the Kagyu lineage. He was trained in all schools of Tibetan Buddhism under many great masters such as HH the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa and HH Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche. He took his formal education in India at the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, Gangtok and Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, Varanasi, India and has served as Professor of Tibetology in Sikkim for 17 years. His doctoral thesis was on the Rimé, or Ecumenical Movement in Tibet. Since 1990 he has been traveling and teaching Buddhism and meditation at more than 50 universities, institutes and Buddhist centres in Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia and Asia. He is the official representative of HH the 17th Karmapa for Europe and the founder of Karmapa Foundation Europe. Rinpoche Spoke with students at RYI on April 6th 2018.

Kyabgön Phakchok Rinpoche is a lineage holder of the Profound Treasures of Chokgyur Lingpa from the Nyingma School of Early Translations and one of the throne-holders of the Riwoche Taklung Kagyu Lineage. Phakchok Rinpoche’s primary root gurus are his grandfather, the late Kyabje Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, and late Kyabje Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche.  

Phakchok Rinpoche has received a traditional education from the Dzongsar Shedra in India, the complete Chokling New Treasures lineage from Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche and Kyabje Tsikey Chokling Rinpoche, and the Great Perfection lineage from Nyoshul Khen Rinpoche. Rinpoche’s teaching style is direct, addressing the needs of those present; traditional, not compromising the methods of practice and transmission in the slightest; and, accessible, teaching the profound meaning in a way that is able to be understood and glimpsed by people of diverse backgrounds. Rinpoche spoke with Students at RYI on 28th June, 2018 and also gave some advice regarding how to apply these teachings in daily life.

Most of the selections are chanted by the temple’s resident monks, where some of the chants, bowls, cymbals and horns are used
