For this week's @disquiet challenge I returned to the use of field recordings that I'd mash together to create sound-based pieces when I got back into creative practice during lockdown in 2020. I was recording bird song this weekend, and by accident I'd switched the Zoom recorder on in my pocket when I got back to @kate-gallaher's house, so there's a speeded up version of me going through the door and making coffee that runs throughout all echoed up. I've taken fragments of @stellato-strings trying the looping machine alongside some of the bird and stream sounds I had taken that morning. So the piece becomes like entering a 5D portal of exterior and interior worlds, mixing up how I started making artworks and blending this with the editing composition practice I started developing first using Audacity, and now on Logic with all the big spangly effects 'n fings.

Disquiet Junto Project 0614: Alternate Route
The Assignment: Do something you often do, but differently.

Playing acoustic instruments into a system of effects is a thing I’ve been doing a lot. Usually I do this in an improvisational, exploratory way: having only a rough idea of what I want to start off with, and then just seeing (actually: listening) where the music will take me.
Something I’ve been thinking about is using this way of playing in a context where at least some of the material is composed, thought out before hand.
So I used the prompt to do a bit of experimenting in this area.

The piece I made uses Erik Satie’s Gnossienne 2 as its main material. 
My idea was to dissect that piece into its component parts, then play and explore around those separate parts and in the end stitch the recordings together into something that would stay true to the original score. A sort of rearrangement.
In the end I had to abandon that idea. Lack of time mostly. And also, I thought it worked better to give some of the non-melody parts a bit more space.

The instruments used are piano (actually: sampled piano), kalimba, duduk, zither. And I used mainly three effects chains: one centred around saturation (on the duduk), one around using lfo’d panning - and a bit of distortion - as a sort of tremolo effect (on the zither), and one around using reverb with varying room size - giving a sort of tape warble feel - (on the whole mix).

I can see some potential for this way of working with composed material (also using my own compositions), though using composed material while still retaining the notion of the music arising in the moment of playing (that is: without requiring a lot of editing), is a different matter.

The Assignment: Explore, in music, the nuanced differences between two closely related words.

Step 1: Think of two words in any single language of your choosing that mean “quiet.” For example, in English you might choose from “quiet,” “silence,” “hush,” and “tranquil,” among others. (Alternate: You could choose any base word for this project. “Quiet” is simply a recommendation. You might, instead, choose two words that mean “noise,” or something else entirely. Given the nature of this project, it may be best to choose a word related to sound.)

Step 2: Spend time coming to understand the nuanced differences between the definitions of the two words you selected in Step 1.

Step 3: Think about how you can render, through sound, the two different definitions, based on the thinking that you developed in Step 2.

Step 4: Record a piece of music that begins with the sonic rendition of one word and morphs slowly into the other.

Eight Important Steps When Your Track Is Done:

Step 1: Include “disquiet0616” (no spaces or quotation marks) in the name of your tracks.
