Experimenting [naviarhaiku391 ]

A piece for Naviar Records' weekly haiku challenge. As the first word is 'experimenting', I thought I'd experiment with odd time signatures. The haiku has 5, 5 and 8 syllables, so my piece is based round two bars of 5 beats and 1 bar of 8 beats. I also wanted the piece to be quite melodic with the melancholy feel of a moonlit night under the trees.

Here’s another haiku by Tachibana Hokushi, also author of the poem we published last week.

Tachibana Hokushi, whose real name was Tachibana Genjiro, was born in Kanazawa in 1665. Hokushi was one of Basho’s most famous students at the time, and he even accompanied the great master during part of his famous journey through the narrow roads of the North, from Kanazawa to Matsuoka.

I've had the drum loop for this in mind for a few months now but couldn't find a creative route to do something with it. Hope this works though and it's a gentle piece.

Up the mountain

Walking down 7th Avenue on October 28th 2023, around 6 pm. Even though it's autumn, the temperature is high. It feels like summer. It's very humid and the street is crowded.
My phone (tucked in my pocket) starts to record on its own when I reach Times Square. 

The resulting one and a half minute long recording is the material for this particular soundscape, which I think captures the eeriness and the uncanny feeling I had that day. All sounds were processed on a Roland SP-404A sampler and recorded live to a stereo track. Mizuhara Shuoshi was a 20th century Japanese poet. Shuoshi rebelled against the principles of emotional detachment in haiku, which he thought limited his ability to emotionally express himself through poetry: he started a magazine called Staggerbush which focused on a more romantic, lyrical type of haiku.
