Disquiet Junto Project 0697: First Third
The Assignment: Record the first third of a trio.

Please note: While this project is the start of a three-part sequence that will unfold over the course of three consecutive weeks, you can participate in any or all three of those parts. 

Step 1: This week’s Junto project is the first in a sequence intended to encourage and reward collaboration. You will be recording something with the understanding that it will remain unfinished for the time being. Your part will be done, but more will happen. Read on.

Step 2: The plan is for you to record a short and original piece of music using any instrumentation of your choice. Conceive the piece as something that leaves room for something else — other instruments, other people — to join in. (Keep in mind that your piece resulting from this week’s project will be panned to the left in the second and third weeks of this sequence.)

Step 3: Record a short piece of music, roughly two to three minutes in length, as described in Step 2. 

Step 4: This is important: be sure to make your track downloadable because it may be used by someone else in the next Disquiet Junto project, and the one after that.

Deadline: Monday, May 12, 2025, 11:59pm (that is: just before midnight) wherever you are.

Disquiet Junto Project 0697: First Third

الجمهورية اليمنية (al-Dschumhūriyya al-Yamaniyya) - نبتسم (Nahn Namdi Ma'an)

Yemen is a country in the Middle East, in the south of the Arabian Peninsula. Yemen borders Saudi Arabia to the north, Oman to the east, the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea to the south, and the Red Sea to the west. The states of Djibouti and Eritrea are located across the Red Sea, about 20 and 30 kilometers apart, respectively. Yemen also includes the Socotra archipelago and numerous smaller islands in the Bab al-Mandab in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea. However, the state of Yemen has collapsed due to the civil war; several de facto states currently exist on the former territory described above.

In 1990, the two former states, the Yemeni Arab Republic (JAR, "North Yemen"; capital: Sanaa) and the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (DPJ, "South Yemen", capital: Aden), united to form the current state. A civil war has raged since 2013. In this conflict, the Houthi militias succeeded in capturing the capital, Sanaa, and large parts of the country. On March 25, 2015, Saudi Arabia, with the military cooperation of eight other states (the Islamic Military Coalition), launched a military intervention called Operation Decisive Storm to support the central government under President Hadi and Prime Minister Khalid Bahah. This massively escalated the conflict and is considered a proxy war between Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran. As of April 1, 2022, 4.3 million people are internally displaced due to the war in the country. Seventy percent of the population depends on international aid for survival.

It's full of heart, passion, rhythmic content and emergent melodies, and tells a story.  But we'll leave the storyline up to your Imagination. 

That said, from our vantage point, it's a whole other kinda Gypsy music! 😊

The dark: the recent passing of friend Paul Schreiber, owner of Synthesis Technology. Along with fellow rocket scientists Eric Brombaugh and Robert Rich, he engineered the E370 Quad Morphing VCO which I use everyday. He was a true genius, a snarky story-teller, a good hearted guy. I felt honored just to know him, occasionally helping with some demos and testing on various modules.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto.
