I took this cloud photo last week whilst sitting on the beach in the early morning attempting to gather my thoughts, just before work. I had just captured a field recording of the sea when I noticed this cloud looming above the cliff edge, so I’ve chucked that in here too for good measure. 

I wanted to somewhat try to capture the mood I was in when I noticed the cloud.

Probability gate on a Kontakt Irish Harp freebie VST I picked up recently which I'd been curious to try out and the prompt seemed as good a time to do so as any. I don't normally used sampled instruments much but this one was quite fun to work with. The multiple probability gates helped to make the rendered image to MIDI data less dense and more listenable to:

Disquiet Junto Project 0604: Heaven’s Gate
The Assignment: Use a picture of the clouds as a plan for adjusting your sound.

Step 1: Think about the use of a gate in music production. A gate can be described as an “on/off switch, allowing signals over threshold to pass while muting everything below.” (It’s likely that discussion will occur during this project regarding useful explanations of the concept.)

Step 2: Take a picture of some clouds.

Step 3: Think of how to interpret the clouds as a model of a gate.

Step 4: Record a track employing the approach you determined in Step 3 using the picture from Step 2.

I took the cover photo in Ashland, Oregon, earlier this year; no filters were employed. Regarding the title, I’m a Michael Cimino admirer.

Disappearing

Sôen Nakagawa was a key figure in the transmission of Zen Buddhism from Japan to the Western world. Author Sean Murphy, in his “One Bird, One Stone: 108 Contemporary Zen Stories”, tells us an interesting story about the Zen Buddhist master during his time in the U.S.:

“Soen loved to walk around New York City. He’d stare at the lighted skyscrapers, at their tops, he claimed he saw Buddha figures in the lights. “Look at the Buddha,” he’d point, “Shining Buddha!” He’d fill the sleeves of his robes with nuts and berries from Central Park or herbs growing in the sidewalk cracks, and add them to his bowl at the next meal. He loved the musical Fiddler on the Roof, and when asked a question about why some particular point of ceremony needed to be performed in a certain way, he might burst into song, responding “Tradition…!”

This is linked to my track from last week, in both of which I intend to create changing rhythmic patterns. I made a couple of tracks similar to this one but was not entirely satisfied with some of the uneven & glitchy sounds, which were not exactly what I was aiming for. Of course, this is only my opinion & I am probably not the best judge of my own work. At least, although not exactly humorous, it is quite jaunty & light-hearted.

Hi, lately I’ve been working a lot (for a professional assignment) on orchestral soundscapes, so my previous Soundcloud shares were done using sample libraries, a friend’s cello performance and my own upright basses (using my bow)

This one, recorded yesterday and edited and finished today (Friday the 27th Oct 2023 is just me and my multitracked bowed bass , to achieve a noisy, creepy tone I didn’t use any rosin on the bow, so i could get some nasty tones bowing very hard and all around the strings. It was fun, just improvising one track on top of the previous and playing around some cathedral convolution reverbs, a Lexicon Hall at 18 seconds and one instance of the great Valhalla Supermassive (always useful for this stuff, with the right settings it transforms a noisy harmonic into a gorgeous sustained pad )

This one’s dedicated to William Burroughs and is called Rotten Ectoplasm.

hello everyone,

in 1971, flower travellin' band released their epic album "satori". i found a reuters' news report from the same year and fed it through the excellent text-to-speech function built into microsoft edge, and then slowly added grit using audiothing's wires. i don't own a bass guitar, so i laid down the bass line with my gibson guitar and pitched shifted the recording down an octave. drums are native to ableton (64 pad rock kit). i also added some spitfire strings, four layers of live guitar, and one or two granular things. enjoy!!

With my love of tango music, I couldn't resist including a tango piece in this set of duets
Such are the fabulous moves in the tango dance, it seemed equally irresistable to have the players change places at the pianos - twice! There are also glissandos and various percussive effects. For contrast. there is a broad, lyrical 2nd subject
