We continue our six week run of weekly SORRYMIXs with an absolute barnstormer set from "singer, seamstress, dj, and party girl" Maenad (@alana_maenad) recorded live from 7am to 10am at @tossdbk in Brooklyn back in July. 

I met Alana on the internet back when she was living in Pittsburgh. We bonded early over Jimmy Buffett, house history, and big vocal dance tracks. She's since relocated to New York City and I've really enjoyed getting to know her and her boyfriend Gabriel ever since. We did a super fun episode of BOYDZONE together on @8-ballradio but I had somehow never seen her DJ for a crowd until this set that just destroyed me it was so good 😊

tossd is a really killer new-ish DIY party run by Will Jack (@willjackthedj) and Perfect Health (@perfecthealth) that has been putting together some super sweet and intentional local focused lineups lately that are a real treat. I was thoroughly impressed by the scope and attention to detail of their party and absolutely blown away by Alana's joyous butt movin powerhouse of a set, paired with great sound, wicked lighting by pal @violet_flux, and a much appreciated padded dancefloor. Many thanks to Will and Gio for being down to let us host this recording as well - highly encourage supporting tossd's future parties (got one on 9.28 with a sick lineup! https://ra.co/events/2001450).

We woke up from cryo sleep a few weeks back as we arrived to the Tuldorah system. Things have been slow as we adjust to being awake. It's been nice to play Go with Zaid. And Anh is fun to be around, though they sing a lot when doing their chores and it's kind of driving me nuts. Space can be hella boring at times. But today, looking at the planets of Tuldorah in the navigation pane, I felt that sense of wonder that got me into this in the first place.

The year hadn't been very fruitful. We explored yet another planet that ended up being a gas giant. But today, our radar picked up the signal of a previously unidentified rogue planet, which we have named Ortali. It seems to have lined itself up to orbit around the Tuldorah system. This behaviour is fascinating and something we agreed our expedition should research more deeply. We have set the coordinates to Ortali's proximity. While we get there, we'll continue to chart some orbital models and run scans of its surface.

We haven't seen much from Ortali yet, but we are eager to keep exploring. Its surface is unlike anything we have seen before. In appearance it is chitinous, but upon interaction it is incredibly dense and solid. We have discovered several tendril-like lifeforms that sprout from the surface. They are gelatinous, hairy, and gently ondulate. They are not hostile. We have taken some samples to analyze their composition. I can't wait to see what hides in other regions of Ortali.

I am deep into the chasm. Things seemed safe enough but I suddenly got separated from Anh and Zaid. I try to make my way back but the path seems to change every time. The life forms are becoming much denser, they seem to be reacting to my presence. I can't shake this feeling of being watched, puppeteered even. It sends shivers down my spine. I feel like Ortali... is alive."

Introduce yourself:

Just your local NYC nightlife dinosaur, fossilized and fermented. Still slaying though.



What was your inspiration for this mix:

I’ve been working in Upstate New York this year, where I have a monthly residency at this awesome little cocktail bar called Martine. All the local DJs play there. I’ve done almost exclusively 120-130 bpm bitchy house music sets, open to close. It’s been a nice change up from my usual style in NYC. I made this mix to showcase this new side of me. There’s a different pace of living up here and I love making mixes based on the different regional styles and genres I’m around. Some of the parties I’ve enjoyed so far are Sole Rehab, Buddy Buddy, and Pep Rally in Toronto.

I got accepted to a Psych NP program back in the city starting this Fall. In the meantime I’m just DJing, making music, working in the psych ward, publishing research, living my best Hannah Montana lifestyle
