This is one of two AudioMoth recordings that were made on the banks of, and within Carrickalinga Creek over a week in July 2022.The AudioMoths were deployed with the intention of observing the soundscape of two locations and were configured to record for 1-minute at 5-minute intervals over a 24-hour period for the week.

Disquiet Junto Project 0676: Sub Melody
The Assignment: Bury a slow melody deep inside a drone.

Step 1: We did a drone project last week and it went well, so let’s do another one. You needn’t have done last week’s to do this week, as is always the case. Again, you may, yourself, be experienced recording drone music, or you may never have recorded any. You may not even be sure what drone music is, in which case read up a bit. Not matter your experience and familiarity, please give some thought as to what constitutes drone music.

Step 2: Think about what makes a melody, even a very slow and simple melody, different from a drone.

Step 3: Now record a piece of music that is, objectively, a deep drone, but somehow within it, somewhere well below the surface, include a slow-moving melody.

I live in Glasgow where every child is taught this verse in school:

here is the tree that never grew
here is the bird that never flew
here is the fish that never swam
here is the bell that never rang

It refers to the Glasgow Coat of Arms which has a tree, a bird, a fish and a bell on it. The symbols represent tales and miracles from the life of St. Mungo (Patron Saint of Glasgow).

It seemed like a good fit for the title of this Junto project.

For the track I used a large metal light shade (that I found in the streets of Glasgow) and a rock. I rubbed the rock around the inside of the light shade, taking special care as to the speed, volume and resonance of the sound. Different areas of the shade produced different sounds; scraping, hissing or resonant tones. I recorded two tracks like this with contact mics and panned them hard left and right. Then playing the edge of the shade with a violin bow, I recorded some pulsing feedbacky sounds. I didn’t use effects or even any EQing, I just kept re-recording things until I got them exactly right, instead of fixing them on the computer.

Tristan Louth-Robins is a South Australian artist working principally in the medium of sound art and field recording. Ideas of sound and its signification are key elements in Louth-Robins' practice, traversing the space between the visual and aural his work is realised through the mediums of recordings, installation, visual art and performance. He is interested in sound and its associative implications - including its relationship to objects, technology, urban space, memory and the natural world. 


Since 2005, Louth-Robins has presented work in Australia and internationally as a solo artist, whilst also collaborating with artists, writers, researchers, musicians and performers. 

Working across a vast array of activities encompassing composition, sound design, installation art, field recording and workshops, his work has been featured in events such as the Adelaide Festival of Arts (2006), The National Regional Arts Festival (2012), Mildura-Wentworth Arts Festival (2013), Fairfax Festival (2013) and Adelaide Fringe Festival (2014); and selected works exhibited at galleries including The Australian Experimental Art Foundation (2009), SASA Gallery (2012, 2015), Light Square Gallery (2012) and FELT Space (2015). His audio works have been broadcast on radio including Radio National, Classic FM, The BBC (UK), Acoustic Frontiers (USA) and RBB (Germany).
