INCANTATIONS is a collection of sixteen visual and sonic experiments centred around the idea of score as spell, curated and produced by Séance Centre’s Brandon Hocura and Naomi Okabe.

A spell and its incantation are distinct, but conjoined by a symbolic, almost umbilical force. A spell is a totem text, a material call for change — a seed, a recipe, an instruction, a potential. The incantation of a spell gives it life, brings breath to body, raises hairs, moves minds. For this project, eight spell-scores were created by visual/text-based artists for a musician/composer to incant. Taking a wide interpretation of what can be considered a score, these works include concrete poetry, collage, painting, drawing, spell-poetry, instructional art, and recipe. The resulting sound works give voice to these evocative “texts”, residing in the liminal space between musical form and magical utterance.

When DJ Python first came up with the term "deep reggaeton," it sounded like a bit of a joke, but as the years have passed and this unique NYC producer has continued experimenting with slowed-down dem bow rhythms and introspective melodies, his seemingly tongue-in-cheek descriptor now feels more appropriate than ever. On June 10, he'll be linking up with the Dekmantel label for the first time for a new EP called 'Derretirse.' Ahead of its arrival, we debuted the floaty synths and subtly booming beats of "pq cq" on Red Bull Radio's First Floor, our weekly look at what's new in electronic music.

DJ Python "pq cq" [First Floor Premiere]

It all began eight years ago with a copy of R. Murray Schafer’s The Tuning of the World found in a box in a cabin, deep within the Pacific coast rain forest. This catalyst provoked Scott Gailey to draw inspiration from the sublime environment that surrounds his home on the West Coast of British Columbia. This exact landscape had a profound effect years earlier on a group of composers centred around Schafer and Simon Fraser University, including Hildegard Westerkamp and Barry Truax, who banded together as the World Soundscape Project (WSP). Where the WSP was primarily interested in field recording as sound ecology - documenting, preserving, and archiving a changing landscape - Gailey explores the musicality of field recordings through various synthetic approaches, a way to access the ambiguous emotional content latent in the natural world. There is a subjectivity to Gailey’s work, and in that sense it has more in common with the sensual musique concrète of Luc Ferrari, or even the Fluxus tape works of Henning Christiansen, than with the WSP. Despite having roots in this well of thought, Polysensuality is undeniably modern, finding kinship with contemporary works by Sugai Ken, Visible Cloaks, and Meitei, while also dipping a toe in the sound pool created by Haruomi Hosono and Hiroshi Yoshimura. Gailey has previously explored this palette in his duo You’re Me with Yu Su, but here there is more space, more silence, greater extremes, and in this way it is more personal, like a soliloquy rather than a conversation. Personal Wastelands is an album rooted in contradiction. Although FOQL and Fischerle are both based in Poland, these two artists—who are working together here for the first time—come from distinctly different backgrounds. FOQL, a former member of the groundbreaking Oramics collective who’s currently a part of SHAPE’s 2020 artist roster, usually operates in the margins between IDM and industrial, while Fischerle, a sonic nomad who heads up the Pawlacz Perski label, is someone whose detailed creations routinely bust through established notions of genre.

Forged over the course of a few sessions in FOQL’s Warsaw studio, the album began with improvisation, as the two artists—armed only with two identical drum machines—gradually discovered some remarkably potent common ground, a nebulous "wasteland" of bleak atmospheres, hypnotic dub and corroded rhythms. There’s a bleakness to the music, yet the album's percolating percussion and robust basslines—which nod toward the more experimental end of the UK hardcore continuum—are downright lively, even when they've been slathered in sludgy reverb. Like many releases on Paralaxe Editions, Personal Wasteland defies easy categorization, but despite its many contradictions, it's a compelling document of what can happen when two exploratory talents join forces and simply let their creativity run free.
