This first EP of Human Rebellion is a nice overview of their universe. An atmosphere globally dark but also sometimes very deep and contrasted, composed of cold and percussive basslines, hypnotic arpeggios, sci-fi textures straight out of their modular and analog synths. Rooted in the underground mentality of the 90s, the whole thing is quite evocative, grabbing hold of a euphoric funk sound and transporting it into the 2020s with a modern, high-tempo pulse. In blending the raw, pumping energy of warehouse techno with the glimmer of disco cabaret, the Bay Area native takes a refreshing tangent on dancefloor tools which render themselves distinct from his contemporaries in the space.

Zero Idea describes Xpressions as a deeply personal journey— “each track, mood and sonic idea is a dance floor representation of significant life events that shaped my adult years”. The album lands as a maturation of both musical composition and personal character for the artist.

From the atmosphere building intro in “Foreword”, to the uptempo soul of “Seventh Heaven”, and the high voltage intensity of “Overload”, the album delivers a carefully contained and diligently paced listening experience, where the vivacity of the tracks is at no point overwhelming, and yet the energy never fails to deliver. Standout moments include title track “Xpression”, a relentless, straight-to-the-point tech-funk heater which perfectly showcases the Zero Idea ethos, as well as ‘Epiphany’ with its blissful blend of deep melodies and driving beats which encapsulate the album’s emotional depth.

Even though Marc Acardipane started dropping hints about the importance of 2017 back in the early '90s, few people expected the German hardcore pioneer to actually follow through on the idea. But low and behold, last year saw him returning to his much-loved work as The Mover, and now he's put together a new album, 'Undetected Act from the Gloom Chamber,' that builds upon his rave legacy. The LP is slated to drop on March 23 via Boidae and his own Planet Phuture label, but ahead of that we debuted the booming breakbeats of "Shadow Deception" on Red Bull Radio's First Floor, our weekly look at what's new in electronic music.

Break Cycle marks Fly By Night’s third release of 2020 with a heavy fusion of breaks & electro from up-and-coming artist Tom Place in a 3-track EP. Following his releases on Bade Records and Aloka’s Typeless, this year has marked an emergence for Tom as he further embellishes his recognisable brand of techno-inspired electro. The EPs opener, Eight Five, is a heavy-hitting electro track featuring a rolling drum beat and an instantly recognisable vocal echoing throughout its’ inner realms. Followed up by its’ more spacey counterpart Break Cycle, a track which builds tension perfectly and exactly surmises what makes Tom’s production so exciting to listen out for right now. Featuring heavy UK bass influences, this track really doesn’t belong in a world where vibrating soundsystems can’t pulse out its’ unrelenting bassline. The EP is wrapped up with the genre-defying Transients, a floaty, emotional track, which serves as a reminder to Tom’s dubstep roots, while still remaining indistinctively electro. Break Cycle embodies a perfect summary of the direction Fly By Night are pushing into as a label, at the start of a busy period of more things to come from both the artist and label.
