The Joy Thieves have come a long way since their ‘This Will Kill That’ debut way back in the pre-pandemic times. But troubled times make for troubled art, and the band’s first full length offering sees them in violent, acerbic form.

Departing from their usual modus operandi of featuring a different vocalist on every track; this time around The Joy Thieves are fronted by the mercurial Chris Connelly (Ministry,  RevCo, Fini Tribe, The Damage Manual) on every track. The songs are also harder, faster and angrier than ever before, with Connelly describing the album as; “… Everything I wished I could have done with Ministry… It’s like being hosed down with lava!”

The Joy Thieves have always enjoyed an ever-changing line-up, and this time around is no exception. New to the party are drummer Big Paul Ferguson (Killing Joke), guitarist Chris Haskett (The Rollins Band, Iggy Pop, David Bowie), guitarist John Haggerty (Naked Raygun, Pegboy), drummer Joe Haggerty (The Effigies, Pegboy), songwriter Scott-David Allen (The Burying Kind, A covenant of Thorns) and Grant Sutton (Monster Trux, The Party Downers, Jumpsuit)

My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult (often shortened to Thrill Kill Kult or TKK) is an American electronic industrial rock band originally based in Chicago and founded by Groovie Mann (born Frankie Nardiello) and Buzz McCoy (born Marston Daley). They became known in the 1980s as pioneers of the industrial music genre – although by the early 1990s they had changed to a more disco-oriented sound – and as a frequent target of censorship groups, including the PMRC, which objected to the band's humorous and satirical references to Satan, Jesus and sex in their song lyrics and stage shows.

During the early 1990s, Thrill Kill Kult had several hits on the U.S. dance club and alternative charts. They also contributed songs to several movie soundtracks and appeared in the 1994 film The Crow. The band has continued to record and tour with a rotating lineup in addition to core members Mann and McCoy.

Ania Tarnowska, known professionally as I Ya Toyah,[1] is a Chicago, USA musician, singer, composer, producer, and performer. Her music incorporates elements of multiple genres including industrial, electro-industrial, goth electro, punk electro, electronic rock, and synthwave.

She began releasing her music independently in 2018, with 4 single releases, followed by her self-recorded and self-produced debut album, Code Blue. In 2019, she released 5 singles, participated in many collaborations, became a member of post-industrial supergroup, The Joy Thieves[3] and toured excessively with bands such as Pigface and Zwaremachine. In 2020, she released 2 singles and a double album of remixes titled Code Blue Reloaded plus bonus album Code Blue Revelations.[6] In 2021 Out of Order - a 5 chapters E.P. consisting of five singles and music videos came out in both digital and physical forms.

When spoken out loud in Polish, I Ya Toyah means “It’s Just Me.” Her logo art merges the symbols for peace and anarchy that symbolizes her “rebel psyche.] and also a direct plagiarism of the name of iconic singer "Toyah" and her seminal work "EIYA".

Born and raised in Lódz, Poland, Ania began her music education as a child, studying classical guitar, piano, vocal performance, and music theory. She moved to the United States as a young adult, and soon became a part of multiple musical projects, performing with metal, punk rock jazz, and prog rock bands in prominent venues across the US.

In 2016, she graduated as the valedictorian from SAE Institute, where she focused on Music Business and Audio Engineering. In 2017, she began working at her home studio on her solo project, I Ya Toyah, and her debut album, Code Blue, was released independently on Oct. 26th, 2018. True to her motto, she spent the majority of 2019 “spreading the disease of music and infecting the human race”[10] by touring.

In 2020, she was scheduled to tour the US and Canada as direct support for Stabbing Westward, but it was postponed, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The remainder of 2020 was spent creating new material for her upcoming EP, Out Of Order, and collaborating with various artists.

For this first commentary under the new show format, REEL TALK co-hosts John Galope and Ilker Yucel  chose the 2008 film by Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, Bronson.
One of the more unique movies of the last two decades, this semi-biographic dramatic comedy - or would that be a comedic drama? - served as a vehicle for then burgeoning star actor Tom Hardy, testing the mental and physical limits of his skills as an actor. Based on the life of Michael Peterson (a.k.a. Charlie Bronson), the story is told in a grand theatrical fashion, recounting key events and the inner thoughts of the man who would become known as Britain's most violent prisoner. From rebellious youth to petty criminal, bare-knuckle boxer to outsider artist, the film presents a loose interpretation of the man's life and emotional turmoil, offering little-to-no-insights, but a high degree of entertainment.

Episode 3-2 - Commentary: Bronson (2008)

Emerging from a three-year-long hiatus is musician, actress, model, and sociocultural rabble rouser Yvette Lera as she unveils the music video for her song, “Burning Planet.” Originally written and recorded by Lera with Will Gannon in 2012, the track presents the artist’s premonitory observations of a world in disarray, with Lera explaining that “The Planet is burning and being destroyed by those in power who are corrupt and who wish to control humanity and destroy all resources for their diabolical agendas.” A boisterous industrial/rock track that hearkens back to the artist’s early days as a member of Chicago band Lick, the accompanying video was shot in Antioch, TN by Brandy Powers Crowe, edited by Lera in a straightforward and D.I.Y. style that she describes as “a Tik-Tok video on crack.” Of its style, Lera comments that “the rawness of little to no resources can be really cool and has a magic to it.” The juxtaposition of Lera seemingly ranting in a manic and maniacal fashion on a sunny day in a cemetery before shifting to the post-industrial waste of an abandoned Checkers, framed by images of current world events, further emphasizes the song’s themes; “We must be the light in these dark times,” she continues, “to help restore balance to humankind and this planet before it’s too late.”

“Burning Planet” marks the first material Lera has released since 2020 when she appeared as a guest vocalist in Chrome Pipes’ “Lights Out!” single; before that, she had enjoyed a brief stint as a co-host of the Chicago-based MKUltraSound Podcast helmed by MK Ultra Magazine‘s Alex Zander. Over the years, Lera has collaborated in numerous bands and projects with the likes of Glenn Danzig, Taime Down, X-Japan’s Hide, Chris Vrenna, Die Robot, and with Killing Joke members Jaz Coleman, Geordie Walker, and Paul Raven. “I have full control of my message and how I want to portray it,” she states, with plans to unleash more music in the coming months, much of which was recorded but had remained unreleased for more than a decade.
