Aparecida Vilaça is currently Associate Professor in the Postgraduate
Program in Social Anthropology, Museu Nacional/Universidade Federal do
Rio de Janeiro, and a researcher for the National Science Research
Council (CNPq). Since 1986 she has worked among the Wari' Indians of
Southwestern Amazonia, Brazil. Fieldwork has been financed by the Ford
Foundation, the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research
(predoctoral grant and international collaborative grant), and Finep.
She was Professor Invité at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences
Sociales in Paris in 1999, Directeur d'Etudes Invité at the Ecole
Pratique des Hautes Etudes in the same city in 2000, Visiting Professor
of the Centre of Latin American Studies of the University of Cambridge
in 2001, and Visiting Scholar in the Department of Social Anthropology
at the same university in 2004. She is a visiting fellow at CRASSH
during Lent term this year.

An introduction to forced migration studies | Matthew Gibney

This week, Latin Pulse studies the culture of indigenous religions as the program dives into the history of the Day of the Dead. The program takes a look at the impact of colonialism on this holiday, and how those changes continue to impact Latin America today. However, the day continues to be a celebration of humanity's relationship with death and the environment. Then, in the second half of the show, the program analyzes Mayan spirituality and its central role in Mayan culture. The news segment of the program follows the evolving situation with a group of missing university students in Mexico.

Speakers: Professor Dawn Chatty (Refugee Studies Centre) and Professor Annika Rabo (Stockholm University) 

This seminar presents very preliminary and partial findings from an ongoing British Academy-funded study to examine the impulses which led so many to volunteer their time and energy to welcome and make Syrians and other refugees feel ‘at home’ upon arrival in the United Kingdom and Sweden. Rather than focus on the suffering of Syrians and other displaced people seeking safety (Chatty, 2018; Rabo et al, 2021; Beck, 2021; Cantat, 2021), it turns to interrogate the motivations which drove so many citizens and residents to step forward and be generous to those in need (Chatty, 2017). In the UK there was little media sympathy for such hospitality whereas in Sweden media was generally very supportive. These two study sites offer an opportunity to study volunteering to come to the aid of Syrians in both a relatively hostile policy environment and a sympathetic one.

The Abelam people of Papua New Guinea are known for their elaborate initiation ceremonies. While these are no longer performed, the Abelam nevertheless continue to cultivate, decorate and display massive yam tubers, reaching up to 10 feet in length. Globalisation has deeply transformed local customs, yet this phenomenon, mixing agricultural techniques, rituals and magic, has maintained its relevance. This lecture will outline how non-western representations of society can, surprisingly, take the shape of very long yams.
