For Trushmix 172 we got Kim Dürbeck straight outta Sandefjord Norway. The techno and jungle producer is part of the younger generation of producers from Norway, operating in the outskirts of the Oslo scene. Active producing new music and live sets.     

For Trush he made a mix mainly jungle related in style, with a few detours through different sounds and genres, a fun trip through the sounds and inspirations of Mr Dürbeck!

The latest Theory Therapy mix comes from Austin-based artist Gi Gi. I became aware of the producer after they released Lumino Pleco, one of the most spellbinding releases I’ve heard in a long time. The album, released on New York’s Quiet Time, is made entirely of samples from artists including Prince, Erykah Badu, Vangelis and Miles Davis, then reshaped and recontextualised to say something completely new. If it wasn’t for the liner notes, you would have no idea that this tactile, otherworldly ambient album contains tracks from some of music’s biggest icons.

The fact that it does though adds to the magic of Lumino Pleco. The record brims with life just as a city skyline is filled with people unseen to the naked eye. It is rich, intricately layered ambient music that moves and slowly unfurls, revealing new details with every listen.  

Since the release of the LP, I’ve been catching up with everything that Gi Gi has been involved in, including their incredible three-hour mix for c- and more recent recording for Mitamine. Like the music they create, the Texan’s mastery of rhythm, texture and tone are clear; each mix is absolutely seamless. 

The same can be said for their Theory Therapy recording. There’s unreleased music from Perila, Nueen and an unnamed musician alongside the likes of Dettinger and Massive Attack, tied together in a way that they become almost imperceptible from one another, regardless of how familiar you are with their songs. “The seams are blurred in a way that might allow the listener to become easier enveloped”, they tell us.

"I felt compelled to make this mix during my mandatory hotel isolation period, depicting certain moods I was flowing in between; reflective, sensual, longing, hope... suspended in time. The tracks are very special to me and remind me mostly of missing loved ones. I really wanted to focus on speech and lyric - especially female vocals. The mix is actually a vessel for femine energy and some of what that represents to me. Snippets from the “100% Genuine” CD released on Rephlex records have been woven throughout the mix, a collection of real phone recordings from a dating agency."

@roza-terenzi aka. Katie Campbell, has escaped Berlin lockdown and is currently on the first leg of her NZ tour, starting with Beacon Festival in Auckland. 

She delivers us a pretty special mix for our 24th instalment in the series - a little more down-tempo and reminiscent of her iso-diaries while in NZ quarantine.

Hue & Saturation Mix 024: Roza Terenzi

Wonja (@wonj) is an elite level record collector. The Oakland-based DJ and producer has been putting together mixes for many years that are filled with music that is hard to describe, let alone to find. From teary-eyed Italo disco to her series of Wood Glass Metal mixes via world music and more club ready sounds, she is a Jedi-level digger who also occasionally produces solo, or with partner Dan as Motoko & Myers. Her main priority, though, is to devour and share as much music as possible.

This week's podcast is a two hour trip to the outer edges of Wonja's collection that her partner describes as "hard sci-fi party tracks." It is a wide open and spacious selection where alien details, solar pulses and cosmic motifs all drift by as scattered percussion only hints at the most skeletal rhythms. Nothing about the tracks is at all familiar, and all genre terms are redundant. Even when more propulsive grooves do arrive, the sound sources are wonderfully weird and abstract, yet the desire to dance is as primal and compelling as ever. Few mixes are as full of WTF?! moments as this one.

Certainly, my name is Iggy, I’ll be clocking 32 years of age in a few months.  Born and Bred in Kansas (physically) & Puerto Rico (spiritually), raised in Florida, and re-residing in Kansas City, MO at the moment.


If you could place a dj booth anywhere in the world… where would it be & what would you play? 

I’m going to need a time machine, but I want to be in a forest in the late Cretaceous period playing Jazz-Funk chillers for the first bees and flowers to ever exist! 

Favorite late night snack? 

(thinking emoji) Tough… A nice bowl of cereal with a minimum of one refill.

Advice to beginning dj’s? 

Do your own thing, play what you love, learn about what you love, be kind to everyone who works with you, be humble, tip well, don’t order the special (it’s mostly leftovers).

Favorite club & why?

The (now-defunct) Emerald Space in Kansas City, MO because it was the real beginning for me and I have got so many fond memories of throwing and playing Botnet (RIP 2008-2010) parties there.

Originally written for the ‘Horizons Sauvages’ exhibition by painter Marie-Laurence de Chauvingy de Blot, @deejaydugong accompanying composition is the reification of a shared love of nature - setting out to capture the essence of her painting in musical form. Using natural sound pallets and layered loops, the complex bio-poetics of the ecosystem are explored in the fragility of their restless liminality. Environments in motion. Above all, the compositions are meditations on the importance of preservation.

There we have it then: after-the-fall organic ambience across two full sides. Essentially essential - a blueprint for the next generation of New Age music. The resynchronization of what was, what is and what is yet to be.
