Premiere: Fabian Balino - Endless Story [3rd Avenue]

As Michael A continues his fruitful relationship with Proton Music, the Belarusian artist blossoms with a third instalment of his successful EP series. Adding to a raft of immaculate original tracks and powerful remixes, "Fantasy, Vol. 3" now takes centre stage.

Opening proceedings, "Spring Singing" is an aptly titled jaunt through smooth progressive house territory as a light percussive backdrop and deep kick pave the way for melodic touches to weave their way across the track in delightfully pitched variations. Building into the second half, the track hits its zenith with an effortless combination of rhythm and melody. "You Are Here" continues the intricate percussive top line arrangement of its predecessor before a rich sub-bass groove adds depth. Subtle melodic motifs wend their way at the mid-point as synth phrases shimmering in panned delays provide the perfect sonic colour. Developing, after the breakdown a scintillating dancefloor track erupts as the powerful kick creates a dynamic force. The third original track finds "Poison Pan" opening with a stunning combination of bass dominance and intelligently cadenced rhythm. White-noise fuelled pads add weight while a shimmering arp filters into sonic range, backed by counterpoint chords and raw LFO power at the breakdown. The delicate groove and sumptuous arp build once more in the second half to magical effect.

A newcome to the Proton Music catalogues, about : river have already demonstrated their flair talent via an array of labels including Nie Wieder Schlafen, Sound Avenue and Everything Will Be OK. Combining the craftsmanship of Oleg and Ervin Ivanov, the father and son partnership hit the ground running with June 2021's "Go Into The Mist" EP. Featuring a glorious musical triptych, the duo debut on Proton Music with a beautifully imagined interpretation of "Fantasy". Using the melodic themes inherent in Michael A's work, the about : river remix creates a sumptuous melodic tapestry that weaves golden threads in intricate sonic patterns to create a stunning new picture that pitches and falls in delicate patterns. Anchored by a driving beat and clicking, ticking percussive patterns, the result is an original and imaginative interpretation.

A second newcomer finds Alan Thomas Doyle creating another a progressive house gem through his amháin moniker. An artist who has performed in Europe, North America and across his native Australia, amháin has found his production talents in similar demand with work for The Purr, Sound Avenue and Meanwhile. A single remix for Particles in May 2021, remixing Loveclub, Mariner + Domingo, is now followed by a lilting progressive gem that takes the central melodic themes of "Silent Moments" and transforms them into a rolling groove-fuelled affair that is filled with delicate spot effects and pitched synth phrasing. Making clever use of the original components, a free-flowing interpretation waxes and wanes with ease across the 7-minute piece.

Michael A's "Fantasy" opens a new world of mystery and magic with three new originals and remixes from about : river and amháin.

Release Promo Review

The latest offering from Tash's Movement Recordings finds label stalwart Simos Tagias returning for a new EP. Since first emerging nearly a decade ago, the Greek artist has continued to earn the praise of progressive music tastemakers Cid Inc, Guy J, Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren. Revered imprints such as Higher States, Juicebox Music, Mango Alley, meanwhile, Proton Music, Replug and Sudbeat have all served as recent landing spots for his groovy melodic sound. Now, on the strength of 2020's 'Molecular', Simos makes a welcome return to Movement Recordings with 'Mattel' alongside a remix from Stereo Underground.

Beginning with the pulsating grooves of 'Mattel', Simos marries fluid rhythms with radiant atmospheres and sweeping effects. Evolving percussive arrangements add nicely to its mediative pulse, before shifting energy into a mystical break. Understated in nature, the centrepiece delights with shimmering arrays and gentle percussive splashes, perfectly complementing emerging arps and emotive melodies, as the groove drops for a charged finale. The companion piece 'Paloma' proves to be a perfect complement with its deeper design and emotive sensibility. Bulbous bass tones flow through nostalgic key changes, perfectly playing off a maze of driving percussion and bubbly chord stabs. Refined and understated, the main break continues to elevate mood through a haze of colourful harmonics, eventually melting down to a flurry of drums for an atmospheric finale.

The release concludes with Stereo Underground making his label debut and providing the lone interpretation of 'Mattel'. Famed for releases on Balance Music, Einmusika, Lost and Found, Sudbeat and UV, the Israeli artist sits firmly in progressive music's elite class of producers. As a favourite of the genre's premiere tastemakers, the Tel Aviv resident has a long list of supporters, including Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren, Guy J and John OO Fleming. Also, an accomplished DJ, the BPM Collage founder has shared the stage with Danny Howells, John Digweed, Lee Burridge and more. Now embarking on his first remix project of 2022, Stereo Underground adds Movement Recordings to his resume with a gorgeous rendition of 'Mattel'. Clocking in at three minutes, an intro of wispy textures, pixie-like melodies and flickering percussive arrangements set the course for broken beats and a warm underbelly of voluptuous bass. Tasteful and euphoric in equal measure, its hopeful leanings are furthered through a timely break with buoyant beats charging forward towards a lively crescendo and goosebump worthy finale. It rounds out a welcome return to Movement Recordings for Simos Tagias, an artist who furthers his place amongst the world's finest progressive house producers with 'Mattel'.

Deepwibe Underground's -102C opens the fall season with a new single from The Cobb. With 'Vesna' landing in Septmeber alongside a remix from Not Demure, the Russian artist continued to impress with his deep organic sound. Armen Miran, Atish, Sabo, Sasha and more chimed in with support and in turn added another memorable addition to The Cobb's ever-expanding discography. Now as we enter the years fourth quarter, -102C unveils The Cobb's latest creation 'Spring Time', alongside a remix from Mass Digital.

As The Cobb continues to operate at a creative peak, it is the jubilant sounds of ‘Spring Time’ which set the course for this change of seasons. Played out over eight sun-drenched minutes, a storyboard of nature-centric motifs and creamy tonal themes gets intertwined with chunky basslines and dusty percussion. Sitting at the heart of the journey, a memorable interlude carries youthful spirits with vocal overlays, set against a hazy harmonic backdrop, before eventually melting down into a glowing finale.

The release concludes with Mass Digital making his label debut and providing the lone interpretation of ‘Spring Time’. Highly regarded in the world of organic house, the Serbian artist boasts an impressive discography highlighted by releases via Akbal Music, All Day I Dream, Hoomidaas, Sol Selectas and TRYBESof. As a favourite of Above and Beyond, Lee Burridge and Hernan Cattaneo, Mass Digital now makes his -102C debut with a gorgeous rendition of ‘Spring Time’. From a deeper vision, the Novi Sad resident draws on the sensibilities of the original, working fragmented melodies over a bed of organic beats, exotic percussion and hazy harmonics. Placid pads and whimsical plucks emerge across the first movement, perfectly setting the stage for a heartfelt break and soulful conclusion. Sensational stuff from Mass Digital, making for another excellent -102C project from The Cobb. Don't miss it.
