"Black Truffle is honoured to present the first reissue of a true underground masterpiece, Massimo Toniutti’s Il Museo Selvatico (The Wild Museum), originally self-released on LP in 1991. Like his better-known brother Giancarlo (whose classic 1985 Broken Flag LP La Mutazione was reissued by Black Truffle in 2015), Massimo Toniutti was active in the vibrant underground industrial/noise scene of the 1980s, contributing to releases on legendary labels such as Broken Flag and RRR and self-releasing a series of cassettes between 1984 and 1988. Existing in a private world apart from the noise and dark industrial tropes of many of his contemporaries, Toniutti’s Il Museo Selvatico is an entirely singular work of domestic electro-acoustic exploration.

Made up primarily of what Toniutti calls ‘small and rare noises’ or sonic ‘knick-knacks’ recorded between 1987 and 1990, the five pieces that make up the original LP usher us into a crepuscular space populated by mysterious traces of everyday life. Toniutti weaves a loose net of distant clanks, dull thuds, metallic resonance and skittering percussive sounds, allowing the sounds to breathe against a backdrop of near-silent atmosphere. Although the haunted ambience recalls the work of contemporaries like Organum, Toniutti generally steers clear of long tones and drones, preferring to arrange brief, sometimes staccato sonic objects into patters of repeating figures and isolated events whose overall compositional shape remains somehow ungraspable. Although glimpses of recognisable location recordings and instrumental sounds can occasionally be made out, for most of the record the sources of the sounds we hear remain teasingly mysterious, an abstracted memory of everyday actions and atmospheres. l Museo Selvatico is accompanied here by an additional LP of material recorded at the same time, composed especially for this reissue into two side-long suites that inhabit the same haunted space as the original LP while occasionally making use of more maximal compositional strategies.

Don't Worry About The Darkness, Mother, It Conceals Nothing

Okinawa-based artist Kanako Horiuchi centres her practice around her voice and the sanshin - an Okinawan musical instrument and precursor of the mainland Japanese shamisen – but opens the aesthetic possibilities of the instrument wide open, including excursions into electronic music, Senagelese music, minimalism and more. On 'Hope' she explores both the opaque nature of our current times and the glimmer of hope we can find in different places. ‘Darkness’ dives into the present with industrial synth washes and electronic drum cycles, before setting new co-ordinates on with the help of a drifting Okinawan Taiko on ‘Break Away’. On ‘Hope’ she shares vocal refrains with her 2 year old daughter, telling the tale of a buddha's arrival, world peace, mothers and the sea appearing. On final track ‘thanks’, recorded in Senegal before lock-down, she returns her instrument to folkloric traditions of the country, embracing the hope that can be gained through travel, exploration and generational love between mothers and children.

TR053 - Kanako Horiuchi - 'Hope'

During the winter of 2019-2020, I was the recordist on a small team project headed by Shi Tanding and had set out from our base in Dali, Yunnan, to document traditional Mongolian folk songs throughout the Inner Mongolia region of China. We traveled and recorded in the western peripheries and interior for 70 days until our project was truncated by the Covid-19 situation which ground the entire country to a screeching halt in late January and movement was no longer possible. By that point though, we had been recording for over 2 months, so here are some varied highlights we collected throughout this vast region. 
The squeaking animals you hear in one part are camels, numbering about 10,000 in this spot gathered for a sparsely attended camel festival & races in the desert. The ones closest to me were striking up casual conversation I guess.
Most music recordings were done in family homes, in living rooms, a couple in a shop, a classroom, and a few outdoors (it was the dead of winter and extremely cold!) Typically, we'd only get one chance to quickly enter a home, sit for a while and chat over milk tea and Mongolian cheese then set up a simple 1 to 3 mic arrangement and record some songs. With some cleanup, the recordings here mostly turned out decently I think, though there is one that I simply did not have the right equipment on hand to properly record a 4 piece band as well as I wished I could have. They kept switching positions on me as well.  Nonetheless, I think this collection makes for a rather enjoyable listen - I hope you agree!

"Die Obsoleszenz ist allgegenwärtig und doch immer nur versteckt und (zu) selten diskutiert. Als ein treibender Faktor des kapitalistischen Systems und des damit verknüpften Kreislaufs von "Neukauf und Entsorgung" anstelle von "Instandsetzung oder Nutzungsänderung" ist diese Methode der geplanten Begrenzung der Haltbarkeit diverser Produkte als quasi systemerhaltend (wegwerf-)gesellschaftlich akzeptiert bzw. kaum hinterfragt. Die Klang-Installation "De-Obsoleszenziator" führt genau diese Realitäten ad absurdum, indem dem veralteten, kaputten, ungenutzten, am Straßenrand hinterlassenen sogenannten "Elektroschrott" neues Leben in Form einer Stimme eingehaucht wird. Druckermotoren getrieben von Merklin-Trafos, die Zeit ihrer angedachten Tätigkeit kilometerweise Papier umgewalzt haben, dürfen nun an Saiten klingend in die Jahre gekommene, von TFT abgelöste Röhrenmonitorgehäuse zum schallen bringen während weggeworfene Lautsprecherboxen knopfgesteuert in von Hardware leergefegten Computergehäusen schnarren. Ob das hier entstehende Klangerlebnis als ein melodisch Schönes zu verstehen ist, wäre anzuzweifeln. Doch die Idee hinter dem von Benjamin Wiemann und Lukas Kannemann initierten Repurposing-Projekts (welches nun in der Galerie Pfund&Dollar in Hamburg in Form einer regelmäßigen Bastelsession genannt LÖTLÄB ein Zuhause findet) ist auch nicht einen wohltönenden Zusammenklang zu erzeugen sondern eher den Augenmerk auf die oben beschriebene gesellschaftliche Disharmonie und den Umgang mit den uns zur Verfügung stehenden Resourcen zu lenken."
