Island Wastrel is a song project by Adie Kaye built from broken signals and warped tradition... indie/alt songs built like little folk rituals, then bent by studio toys.

“We Were Looking for Someone More Youthful” is a bright, slightly surreal indie-rock bounce: upright/double-bass and acoustic guitar carry the groove while crunched Telecasters trade lines with soft trumpets, and sparkling pianos. It opens on bowed-bass harmonics with electronic drums, blooms into a jangly, hand-clapped chorus, then briefly returns to the electronic kit for a fizzy tail-out. Mostly live takes; no hard fixes; warm, slightly scuffed edges by design.

Lyrically it’s a wink at ageism and self-contradiction - floating lists of opposites collide with civic ghosts (mayors, preachers, rich men in ditches). The mantra-hook “We were looking for someone more youthful” turns from rejection letter into sing-back catharsis.

As an engineer at London’s RAK Studios, Kaye worked with Kate Nash, Bernard Butler, The Last Shadow Puppets, Gallows, Garth Richardson, Ray Davies, Mark Ronson, and more. He trained under dub legend Groucho Smykle (Sly & Robbie, Black Uhuru, Baaba Maal).

it’s about how quickly we move on 
[ or pretend to ] without ever really processing what broke us in the first place.

the song embodies our emotional vulnerability: how we only open up during the late hours, when substances or distractions make everything feel easier. 
but it’s never a real solution, is it?

and it’s only then that we realize the weight of the past still lingers. we carry unhealed scars into something new and without even noticing, we pass them on to each other in a vicious circle.

and in the end, the person we hurt the most might just be ourselves.
