Furtive is a full-gonzo polychromatic techno conjurer. A Washington DC-based producer, DJ, and event organizer, Furtive manifests the rave with warping, slippery textures and eclectic asides. Furtive helps foster underground community in the DC area as a DIY nightlife organizer, most recently as a member of SEQUENCE, a local team responsible for putting on some of the District’s zaniest techno parties. 

A prolific and multifaceted producer, Furtive has landed releases on Warok Music, ROOM, Metro Xpress, Northallsen Records, and Format Recordings, along with multiple self-published releases and a handful of further pending ones. Furtive's production spans from psychedelic warphole-diving techno, quirky and muscular electro, acerbic acid, crooked ratcheting bass bits, and drum & bass. 

Before the pandemic, Furtive was often sharing billings with internationally celebrated acts like Wata Igarashi, VTSS, Rhyw, Rrose, Umfang, Sterac, Adam X, Tensal, and Developer. During the pandemic, they have remained fully plugged in and engaged by playing live-streams, recording mixes, and steadily working in the studio.

"Given that we’re entering month 9 of the Covid19 pandemic in the US, I wanted to snapshot how it feels for me to be playing/experiencing music at this moment. The goal here was to make a deliberately eclectic mix representative of my moods lately: hopeful, unsettled, wistful, a bit dark, dreaming, playful, melancholic, erratic, with some fleeting moments of tenderness and euphoria.

I went through several folders of stuff I’ve been itching to play, including some recent acquisitions, and landed on the Glacci, the Barker, and the Dadub/Retina.it tracks as the primary ones that would guidepost the flow of the mix. I knew I wanted to have the Barker track near the end, because it's got this sweetness yet it's still kind of thoughtful and longing–a nice, complex mood to leave a listener with during a lockdown.

From there I started seeding a playlist and loosely sorting by 'energy' to connect the feel of the three tracks in a form that I hope is interesting for y'all. I recorded the mix live into Logic via a Xone:96 using 3 XDJ-1000Mk2's and an Eventide H9 (this time just for a little reverb)."

A busy contributor to her local music community, she's a resident and Producer of the Afternoon Show and Programming Education Manager at Seattle's KEXP radio station, and currently serves as Vice-Chair on the Seattle Music Commission, as well as organizing events under the banner of coldwave, industrial, EBM, and synth crew False Prophet and underground techno collective Depth. Sharlese's dark, gritty, ravey sets are perfectly suited to the dancefloor, while still feeling informed by the deep digging collector mentality that comes with a long background in radio.

This episode of Bside Incoming is the Californian creation of a New Englander. An artist with an original sound, excellent taste, and as always, an incredible collection of music. Wonja

The journey began with her formative experience on local and college radio, where a community of like minded music lovers helped to expand Wonja’s sonic horizons. While house and techno form the basis of her live DJ sets she has an intriguing specialist subject: Gamelan, a percussive genre based on the use of metallophone and wood instruments.

Her audiences are usually small, intimate, and local. So it’s a pleasure to transport her intriguing style beyond its ordinary confines. If you like the taste of this, be sure to tune into her Do/While mixtape with DJML. The duo are soon to release an LP on Soda Gong as Motoko and Myers. We’ve got our ears to the ground for this one!
