Furtive is a full-gonzo polychromatic techno conjurer. A Washington DC-based producer, DJ, and event organizer, Furtive manifests the rave with warping, slippery textures and eclectic asides. Furtive helps foster underground community in the DC area as a DIY nightlife organizer, most recently as a member of SEQUENCE, a local team responsible for putting on some of the District’s zaniest techno parties. 

A prolific and multifaceted producer, Furtive has landed releases on Warok Music, ROOM, Metro Xpress, Northallsen Records, and Format Recordings, along with multiple self-published releases and a handful of further pending ones. Furtive's production spans from psychedelic warphole-diving techno, quirky and muscular electro, acerbic acid, crooked ratcheting bass bits, and drum & bass. 

Before the pandemic, Furtive was often sharing billings with internationally celebrated acts like Wata Igarashi, VTSS, Rhyw, Rrose, Umfang, Sterac, Adam X, Tensal, and Developer. During the pandemic, they have remained fully plugged in and engaged by playing live-streams, recording mixes, and steadily working in the studio.

@otodojo's work as a producer, DJ, and visual artist always feels like going somewhere, which makes sense, since his moniker is a play on words amounting to "a sound place for learning". And whether traveling through time or space, there's always a hint of magic, an intuitive sense of when to push the listener and when to give them room to breathe or a playful release. Based in Ithaca, NY, otodojo is an affiliate of Microtones and Acid Camp.

"With this mix I wanted to invoke states of awareness I had when listening to sources of inspiration for music while growing up. I picked a few tracks that I wanted to highlight that aided my foray into electronic music - songs that I went to for a variety of emotional conditions. I then explored connections between those moments and searched for ways to combine them with modern energy. Being fully in Ableton for this mix I found myself reworking many parts, particularly the intro, to match ideas / messages I wanted to convey, the main one being to process inhibitions and trauma by means of sound and movement.

The mix takes some unexpected turns and has an air of inherent silliness to it that I think stems from my desire to be and not be taken seriously, simultaneously. It’s loaded with unreleased material - including a pulsing groove from Ali Berger - ‘Soft Drama’, and an ethereal breaks track from Tenkai Kariya - ‘desert5’, both of which are forthcoming on an audio-visual wave~seed compilation supporting indigenous communities in Ecuador.

Through this process I found that I still feel fresh to many concepts in DJing, and am relearning the sheer creative joy that it holds as a medium for self-expression. For example, this was one of the first times that I made edits specific for this mix, and I thank CCL’s mix for Juanita’s for that inspiration. I learned a lot through this experience and I really appreciate Spontaneous Affinity for having me be a part of this. This mix was a healing process for me and I hope it can be for you as well."

Seattle-based @sharlese's sets combine the contemporary and the nostalgic in a way that feels timeless. A busy contributor to her local music community, she's a resident and Producer of the Afternoon Show and Programming Education Manager at Seattle's KEXP radio station, and currently serves as Vice-Chair on the Seattle Music Commission, as well as organizing events under the banner of coldwave, industrial, EBM, and synth crew False Prophet and underground techno collective Depth. Sharlese's dark, gritty, ravey sets are perfectly suited to the dancefloor, while still feeling informed by the deep digging collector mentality that comes with a long background in radio.

I thrive on the creativity of my friends. I love seeing what they’re doing, watching them, supporting them and I feel honored when they do the same for me.

Seattle is full of talent, bursting at the seams and when I see everyone expressing themselves, it causes me to do what I want to do! I’m pretty lucky to have a radio show where I can play my friends and people I admire on a platform that will hopefully bring more awareness to their work. This episode of Bside Incoming is the Californian creation of a New Englander. An artist with an original sound, excellent taste, and as always, an incredible collection of music. Wonja

The journey began with her formative experience on local and college radio, where a community of like minded music lovers helped to expand Wonja’s sonic horizons. While house and techno form the basis of her live DJ sets she has an intriguing specialist subject: Gamelan, a percussive genre based on the use of metallophone and wood instruments.

Her audiences are usually small, intimate, and local. So it’s a pleasure to transport her intriguing style beyond its ordinary confines. If you like the taste of this, be sure to tune into her Do/While mixtape with DJML. The duo are soon to release an LP on Soda Gong as Motoko and Myers. We’ve got our ears to the ground for this one!

A producer and multidisciplinary artist with links to projects by Optimo Music, Hyperdub and London’s ICA, Venus Ex Machina inhabits the radical realms between electronic music and sound design. Her Bleep mix is an excellent example of just how diverse and exciting this contemporary space is — and the avant-electronica names on the tracklist have featured heavily on our turntables too. The earthquaking stomps of Tzusing’s ‘Shame’ morph perfectly and noisily into the sharp Farsi rhymes of Loraine James and Tardast’s track ‘Marg’, as Venus Ex Machina selects two experimental dub nightmares from Hyph11e before simmering down with the grizzled synth wash of Mica Levi’s ‘Guerreros’.
