Although he is relatively new to the scene, Josh Tong has established himself as a mainstay in Chicago's local techno scene. Josh was born and raised outside of Chicago, and only attended his first techno show in 2019 that was hosted by Format and Obscure. 

He was quickly entranced by the music and its community, proceeding full throttle into the scene since then. Most people probably know him from his relentless delivery of energy on the dance floor but he has also been fiercely honing his craft in mixing starting in 2021. 

Josh is drawn to the deep subs and heavy kicks, as well as the hypnotic rings and textures that lifts and carries the deeps through. As an obsessive gemini, he spends most of his free time combing through new techno track releases and developing hyper-specific organization systems that help him understand better the auditory vocabulary of techno. He approaches tracks as sonic elements that should be layered and built into something that is alive, rather than just selecting tracks. Josh made his club debut for R&D at Podlasie in April, and ever since then has played for other local fixtures like Yard Jamz, Ego Death, and Astral Undertones. He is currently a resident DJ with Format Recordings and newly formed "Entropic".

New York party Merge is often described as a queer techno extravaganza. Over the past two years, it's built a loyal community from the ground up while integrating everything from high-energy trance to disorienting acid into its rave repertoire. Resident Clarisa Kimskii has played a defining role in the collective's growth, largely thanks to the ultra-kinetic and rhythmic pace of her DJ sets.

Time and time again, the Washington DC native has demonstrated her ability to lock in dancers through captivating and hypnotic selections across various sub-styles of techno. There are tribal, witchy cuts. Jacking, Detroit-style funk. Psychedelic, DJ Nobu-style grooves and austere sounds that nod to Sandwell District. It's the kind of range that explains why Kimskii has been booked worldwide many years over, and more and more as of late. Her deep understanding of techno's myriad flavours come from two decades of industry experience as well as esoteric productions on labels like Mysteries Of The Deep and L.A.G. (her own short-lived, underrated, essential techno platform).

Kimskii's long time in the techno scene, her experience and her expertise is expressed in full form on her RA Podcast Moving from industrial grit to gentle transcendence to heady acid, the mix feels free, fluid but also remarkably precise, just like Kimskii herself.

Alright alright, here we are with another installment of Live and Direct after a few months off. Our first recording for 2020 comes from a memorable night last November when our resident Aurora Halal invited Pessimist in to share the booth. 

Aurora provided the opening (and closing) moments, which is a side of the beloved techno we are really enjoying getting to know. Known for her meticulously programmed sets that build with both patience and intensity, this opening stays true to her hypnotic style. Taking us from cinematic dub techno to pitched up club favorites and back again, it's a subterranean and psychedelic ride leading us to the surface just before Pessimist's dnb stylings took over for the night.

Aurora is back in our booth on March 28 alongside Wata Igarashi, DJ Python, Juliana Huxtable and more for Nowadays Nonstop. Tickets for that are available on Resident Advisor now.
