I had a lovely time joining DJ Voices & Beta Librae for their double residency this past November! Here's my set from the night. 

I love the big bass, but I also wanted to weave in some silliness and surprises. The whole night will always be a fond memory for me. Thanks to Kristin and Bailey for taking such good care of me.

A Night in the Skull Discotheque by the beloved underground selector CCL is the latest offering in the T4T LUV NRG label’s highly limited DJ mix series of cassettes. This immersive journey through a wonderland of proto-dubstep sounds from the late 1970s through the year 2000 is a sonic sibling to CCL’s acclaimed 2018 mix Ode to Queer Steppas.

Inspired in part by Eris Drew’s use of “old records to create new styles out of fragments” on her Raving Disco Breaks Vol. 1 mixtape (T4T LUV NRG, 2019), CCL approached this recording with a parallel frame of mind. Created with 3 CDJs, one Turntable, and a Boss Digital Delay 200, the tracks included in the mix are deconstructed from their whole, and constituent parts are intertwined, sampled, and dubbed out while being further stretched beyond their physical limits. CCL mixed many tracks at the 'wrong speed', pitched beyond their original recognizable tone; others are recontextualized through imaginative layering.

With a solid nod to seminal mixtapes of the early 90s, CCL references the namesake for Side A, Bass Is Eternal, an unreleased 1992 mixtape by influential Bristolian producers Smith & Mighty, an important sonic fulcrum amongst the musical tributaries of the hardcore continuum that continues to reverberate to this day. CCL experienced the after-effects of this ‘proto’ sound genesis in 2008, while living in Bristol, by which point its emergent whispers had coalesced into what became known as dubstep. Tracing a rich history of reference through the samples, basslines, moods, and drum patterns emanating from Bass Is Eternal while looking for connections that predate it became a long-term fascination for CCL. The result is a DJ mix that connects the oft-forgotten dots between proto eras and modern developments in bass and dubstep.

For the resulting sonic ride on A Night in the Skull Discotheque, CCL leads us to a fantastical place of timeless surreality – a majestic haunted dancehall soundtracked by a giddy rush of steppers and dubbed-out delights. Subs rattle through syncopated percs, and moody synths glisten in macabre glory. Fantastical dancers wriggle in wispy eternity, liberated from their corporeal forms in all their greatest spiritual wonder. Both extravagant and dusky, A Night in the Skull Discotheque is a world of seductive in-betweens, a place caught between the moodiest depths and the highest exuberance – A love letter to one of the most impactful formative sounds of the last decades.

She's made this special mix for the next edition of Dig Deep, RA's pop-up charity record fair, which is taking place at Hope House in Leeds on Saturday, April 5th, in partnership with Cosmic Slop.

From Batu & Nick León and TYGAPAW to Marcel Dettmann and DJ Plead & rRoxymore, this hour-long mix is made up of records that have been donated to Dig Deep. Get down to the event to nab some of your favourites and raise money for War Child and MAP.

Coming at you direct from the Little “T” LUV NRG Soundsystem truck radio! All the galloping and rolling late 90s tech step and proto-neurofunk that Octo Octa and Faited blast out of a tiny bluetooth speaker inside the cab of an Isuzu NPR HD.

This set was played live at Envelope Soundsytem’s 2024 Ēostre ritual deep in the redwood forest within the Oakland, CA hills. The intention behind this ritual: 

“Ēostre marks a period of rejoining with queer family and community, and of setting intentions towards the approaching sun-drenched days. We celebrate this ritual to conjure the collective dream, and to see the fractal paths toward our individual dream’s first concrete forms. But dreaming alone can not dispel living nightmares—we must speak our dreams aloud and act towards them in anger. Come, you and yours, come weave your hopes with ours.”

The Medellín maverick opens RA.997 with another mind-altering home run.

As part of our countdown to the 1000th edition of the RA Podcast, a milestone in the 18-year history of Resident Advisor's weekly mix series, we're switching up the usual format.

This week, following heady excursions through Lagos, Kampala, Detroit and Chicago, our focus shifts to Latin America—arguably the story in underground electronic music since the pandemic.

After years of being all but overlooked internationally, the explosion of distinctive club sounds emerging from Peru, Brazil, Colombia and beyond has finally begun to get its due.

Among the movement's great success stories are two artists who exemplify its refreshingly undogmatic energy: Verraco and Bitter Babe, and the former handles the A-side of RA.997. 

Is there a more compelling electronic artist around right now? Both in the studio and behind the decks, the Medellín-based DJ and producer currently sits in that coveted creative sweet spot, where every fresh musical morsel feels like a moment. To bask in any of his singular tracks on VOAM, Timedance and now XL Recordings, is to be bowled over by their rhythmic brilliance, madcap hooks and whirlpool basslines. ("Basic Maneuvers," anyone?)

His mix is tough to pin down—a blend of dubby techno, tribal atmospheres, slanted bass and sharp edits. Or, as he puts it in the accompanying interview: “an intersection between dub-infused techno but with some flow, reduced atmospheric tribal, edgy bass cuts, mental emo-tek.”

There’s plenty of unreleased TraTraTrax material here, alongside tracks from artists like Virginia, A Made Up Sound and a euphoric flip of Ploy’s “Ramos.” Slippery, emotional and surgically precise, it’s Verraco doing what he does best.

This summer caught my inspiration in more ways than I can count. "Pressure - ep" is the embodiment of those experiences. It's my interpretation of the feelings and emotions that Ibiza put forth onto me. I hope you enjoy.
