RA Community Connections (RA CC) is a new series of events organised by RA's Global Content Network. A 30-plus strong team of dance music lovers and clubbers, located in some of the world's most exciting hubs for electronic music. The events are planned and delivered by RA's City Managers, who are all deeply connected to their local scenes, in collaboration with local collectives, community spaces, record stores and radio stations. RA CC events will include in-store networking events, interviews with local artists on local radio stations, free workshops and other day-time activities, with a focus on creating an inclusive and safer environment for its diverse members.

About Deep Space Radio

Deep Space Radio was originally formed in the early 1990s by Juan Atkins, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May and Eddie Fowlkes. It was a Detroit radio show dedicated to house & techno. Deep Space Radio served as a platform where these young producers could have complete control in programming and the opportunity to expose the world to new sounds from the underground. Kevin went on to do a Deep Space Radio X-Mix for Germany’s Studio !K7 label in 1997. 2013 marks the return of Deep Space Radio as Kevin Saunderson’s monthly podcast, carrying on the tradition of introducing the most compelling new electronic music artists and presenting the deepest, funkiest techno sounds from the global underground.

RA Community Connections Joburg - Aureli via Lilies Radio

In December 2023, during Miami Art Basel, RA hosted a Community Connections event co-produced by Technique Records and RA City Manager Daniel Jinks. As part of the event, RA Senior Staff Writer Nyshka Chandran moderated a panel with four key figures from the Miami dance music scene: Danny Daze, Jubilee, Nick León, and Romulo Del Castillo to delve into the vibrant, broader history behind the city’s electronic dance music scene.

Miami's music is dominating worldwide club circuits. The city's current sound—forward-thinking medleys of dembow, cumbia, techno, and breakbeats made by both vanguards and veterans—has been rinsed out at festivals and dance floors in recent years, catapulting the city back into global dance music conversations. This hybrid style has ushered in what many call a renaissance in Miami's creative underground, marking a new chapter in the city's electronic music lineage. How has this current sound been influenced by older, influential genres like Miami bass, electro, and IDM that have long characterized the city? Are there any new societal, cultural, and structural changes that are paving the way for ongoing genre cross-pollination? RA sits down with some of the city's most established names for a deep dive into the explosive growth and origins of Miami music.

In November 2023 RA hosted a Community Connections event in Johannesburg, in collaboration with P_ssy Party and Lilies Radio. The event brought together a multitude of voices that shape the city's electronic music communities.

Hosted by local collective P_ssy Party at creative hub and venue The Plug, the panel discussion covered the growth of the electronic music scene in the city and its relationship to accessibility, event organisation and community-building. The talk featured contributions from VNJ's Lelowhatsgood, Deep Town Jozi founder DJ Hara, HomeComing Events' Athabile Ngxamngxa and RA city manager Nickita Maesela.

Mike Parker, you would assume, is a perfectionist. His techno is meticulous, his grooves as hypnotic as any. Over the course of two decades he has honed in on his vision with ever increasing accuracy. He manages to get huge amounts of detail into his tunes that elevates them above purely functional material and lands him on labels like Semantica, Prologue and Tresor in both EP and LP format. 

The American is just as deep and powerful as a DJ, even without the use of kick drums. And that’s the path he follows over the course of one absorbing hour here, laying out a cinematic journey into space that is propelled by ambient synths and sci-fi motifs that set real scenes and have a real sense of narrative. At times it is blissful, at others more unnerving, but rarely will you hear an ambient mix as coherent and compelling as this.

For little or no return, these promoters work tirelessly to bring their communities together. To celebrate this, we’ve collaborated with three crews to ask some of their favourite artists to play alternative sets. They’ll be exploring corners of their record collections that rarely see the light of day, in some of the best intimate venues in the UK.

On Thursday 4th April, we joined forces with Liverpool’s SisBis to host Jayda G at 24 Kitchen Street. She dug deep in a genre that’s been a huge influence on her musically - Rhythm & Blues. From its roots in blues through rock, psych, soul and hip hop, Jayda explored every part of the sound, from its inception right up to the present day.
