Spheruleus is Lincolnshire, UK based artist Harry Towell, who also runs Whitelabrecs and records alongside his brother Stuart as Paper Relics. Harry has been active in the modern Ambient music scene for over a decade and has released works with labels such as Eilean, Hibernate, Home Normal and Time Released Sound. His output on his own imprint has been scarce however, limited to one CD edition 'Obsolarium', released back in 2016.

We launched last year's digital Home Diaries series off the back of 'Canvas Homes' which was a sonic diary of life at home during lockdown. The recording for this album began around 1 year ago with three key sound elements: field recordings, sketches made using acoustic instruments and MIDI keyboard arrangements. The sketches were all captured during brief 1-2 minute recordings to an iPhone whilst in his daughter Isla's playroom. She unwittingly became part of the album and a positive constant during the strange events that were unfolding across the spring and summer. Walks out into local parks and woodlands became a source of field recordings and a connection to the natural world. Then evenings were a time of reflection and processing, as the sounds captured were orchestrated into tracks.

In November another lockdown was announced and Harry decided to repeat the process as a compare and contrast from his original process. The idea to create a second album began with the assembly of a new item of furniture for Isla's room which arrived from France. A bag of spare fixings was labelled 'Supplémentaires' and Harry decided to set about a series of additional recordings with a view to release it as part of a double album. This time, the weather had turned cold resulting in a different lockdown altogether, with more time spent indoors. Isla had grown considerably in the space of just 6 months and her speech was much clearer. A familiarity with the 'new normal' also seems to have translated into the music, with longer, cosier tracks drawing out the winter months. There are more moments of calm and warmth; 'les dormeurs' was created at low volume one afternoon, as the household napped. 'notre cocon' establishes a sleepy comfort in the descent towards the festive period before 'le résumé' plays out a recollection of the year 2020, with Harry using every field recording he'd captured during this most eventful of years. The cover photograph was captured during a family walk in the summer; a reflective gaze into the local 'Bourne Eau'.

Fields We Found is a new direct-to-tape project, heralding back to some of the founding techniques of ambient music. Performed live and recorded to 1/4" tape, 'Thanks' utilises the space between its swells of electronic and sampled tones, intertwining layers of charming melody.

Fields We Found - Thanks (Album Mini-Mix)

In early 2021, the British label Whitelabrecs released the brilliant compilation "Ennio's Muse" to generate money and interest for the film project "Return to Sea and Sardina" by filmmaker Daniele Marzeddu. At that time I had the pleasure of contributing the track "Down By The Sea".

Somehow I stuck with the idea of continuing to deal musically with the theme of the sea, because I like being there: the unison of the waves, the endless view of the horizon and the vastness of the ocean. 

In addition to "Down By The Sea", the EP "Ocean Lines" contains four new pieces that were created this year during stays on the Tuscan and Istrian coasts.

Water Calls Pt. III

Enter a journey of nature recordings from the danish autumn rains, wintery ice lakes, Israeli streams, forest winds and Irish cave drops,
an ambient soul soothing world unfolds, performed live together with the African harp - the Ngoni and the North American traditional double flute.
It was the first series of Nature / Field Recording based electronic live sets I did.

This Set was recorded in 2019.
It's the final third of the Water Calls series, concluding into the depths of the ice.

This translates into three distinct parts. The "valleys" in the waveform give away where they start and end.

Part I: Skittering clouds, downpours.
Part II: Like wind brushing past, with uneasiness creeping in towards the end
Part III: Major key mood, closing with Koto-ish textures and an abrupt ending

Whenever winter arrives, I am always amazed by the beauty of the colours that the sky can create. I will never tire of looking at the infinite beauty of nature; colours and emotions that I love to associate with sounds of a certain type. 
That's why I really want to present some albums during this season.The first release of 2021 describes in an excellent way the tonal range of this winter, so uncertain, cold and melancholic. That Which Is Not is a beautiful project that combines the sound experiments of Nicola Fornasari (Xu, La Petite Vague, etc) and the instrumental ramifications of Pier Giorgio Storti (Morose, Belaqua Shua, etc) who, with notes of cello and many other instruments, adds nuances to a rich picture of pulsating introspection. "The basic sharpness of emotions" is genreless music, the soundtrack of those timeless winter days, when the snow and the ground are still unknown but are aware they have already met millions of times. A debut that I strongly advise you to listen to in solitude …
