Th Blisks - Guesthouse

Produced slowly and meticulously over the last 12
months, these seven tracks are the closet thing we've
had to a new album from Andy Stott since the release
of his debut full-length Merciless five years ago.
Taking influence from an array of seemingly incoherent
noises, from the indefinable and unforgettable mindtricks
of Arthur Russell to the slowhouse of Kassem
Mosse, from the alternate VHS realities of James
Ferraro and Jamal Moss to the Linn Drum classics of the
vintage Prince era - these seven tracks create their own
pace and agenda, largely shying away from the
dancefloor in favour of something more complex and
hard to define.
Following on from the tribal malfunctions of opening
intro Signature, New Ground heads into a chasm of
layered loops, creating a decimated and re-wired funk
template coloured in with frayed percussion and
dislodged vocal samples. North To South starts off from
similar ground but adds a shuffling vibe at a deceptively
intoxicated 110 bpm.
Intermittent is something altogether different, taking
perfectly formed Boogie templates and screwing with
them until nothing quite fits, brittle elements floating in
and out of time yet somehow keeping it together,
before Dark Details delivers the most dancefloor
compatible six minute stretch of the set, all clanging
stabs and dense percussion, somewhere between
Shackleton and Bam Bam.
Execution and Passed Me By end things off on a slowed
down tip, the former deploying an anaesthetised and
padded 4/4 template sunk deeper into the abyss by
deformed, time-stretched vocals, the latter ending off
proceedings with a more delicate palette, letting go of
all that pent-up emotion with nothing but that rumbling
low-end and some strings for company.

Breath of the Wadi is a long, evolving ambient electronic soundscape with subtle trip hop rhythms. Deep, slow beats, dusty hypnotic textures, and experimental granular synths blend with airy pads, deep drones, and modulated synth lines, creating a cinematic, spacious, and ethereal desert atmosphere. Whispered, mantra-like vocals—fragmented words, abstract syllables, and breath-like phrases—float like wind over shifting dunes, suggesting stillness, horizon, sand, and eternity. A hypnotic journey through endless horizons, mirages, and the quiet breath of the desert.

Bassi profondi e lenti, texture polverose e ipnotiche e synth granulari sperimentali si fondono con pad eterei, droni profondi e linee di synth modulate, creando un’atmosfera cinematica, spaziosa e rarefatta da deserto. Voci sussurrate, mantra-like—frammenti di parole, sillabe astratte e frasi-soffio—fluttuano come vento sulle dune in movimento, evocando silenzio, orizzonte, sabbia ed eternità. mono no aware (もののあわれ) is the first compilation to be released on PAN, collating unreleased ambient tracks from both new and existing PAN artists.

Featuring Jeff Witscher, Helm, TCF, Yves Tumor, M.E.S.H., Pan Daijing, HVAD, Kareem Lotfy, ADR, Mya Gomez, Sky H1, James K, Oli XL, Bill Kouligas, Flora Yin-Wong, Malibu, and AYYA, the compilation moves through more traditional notions of what is called ’ambient’, to incorporating wider variations that fall under the term.

“Mono no aware”, ‘the pathos of things’, also translates as “an empathy toward things", or "a sensitivity to ephemera”. A term for the awareness of impermanence, or the transience of things. A meditation on mortality and life's transience, ephemerality heightens the appreciation of beauty and sensitivity to their passing. In investigating the passing of time, the boundaries between memory and hallucination become blurred; between fiction and reality. The movement of time transforms into an eternal present.

The album is mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M, featuring photography by Molly Matalon and design by Bill Kouligas. A limited version of 100 copies will be released as a special art edition in collaboration with Mount Analog for the LA Art Book Fair 2017, before going on general release.
