Refugee Action Compilation

For the next release on Early Reflex we welcome Frankfurt-based producer and composer Lorica (formerly known as Avbvrn), following his debut EP on Display and a split on Destitute.

Lorica filters a surgical attention to detail and sound design through a wide-scope approach to atmosphere and the spatial qualities of music. The resulting work conjures up dramatic, vivid, and tactile sonic landscapes that recall classical forms and techniques, while drawing upon contemporary textures and approaches to rhythm and memory.
Inspired by renaissance arts and their creative process ‘Adaptive Radiation’ [EYX005] stretches further Lorica’s experimental and oblique musical approach to the club-focused context of Early Reflex. The result is a 5-track EP blending cinematic sound design with traces of dubstep, drill, dancehall, trap, and more which is going to hit the listeners both physically and emotionally!

The opener ‘Baikal Rediscovered’ is a great example of Lorica’s production style where the composer blends together orchestral and atmospheric pads with incessant grimey beats and a deep bass-line making it a suitable tool for the club.
A storm of otherworldly sounds in contrast with its trapp inspired rhythmic session protrude in ‘Ochre Skeleton’ originating a surrealistic and peculiar atmosphere.
Approaching the end of the first half of the EP there is ‘Petrified Butterfly’, a dreamy and spooky interlude where synthesised flute melodies, fast-paced percussions and effected field recordings repeat and alternate themselves continuously while evolving every time differently in a never-ending loop until every sound dissolves in empty reverberated spaces.
Entering the second half of the release, listeners get hit by the drilling kick drum and the twisting sound design of ‘Sodiumglanz’, which lead to the closure of the EP.
In ‘Breccia’ Lorica explores further his blend of cinematic effects with the pronounced attitude for the club, delivering a track characterised by pitch-shifting electronic percussions and the harmonic progression of orchestrated instruments and strings.

Loutan's (@loutanclan) tune "Empty Ice Tray" is the first going up from our next release, Refugee Action Compilation. As the name suggests, the release is a 17-track compilation of pure joy, with all proceeds from sales being donated to Refugee Action, an incredible UK charity doing very important work.

Loutan's track is of his usual ilk, with the Moon Rack chief treating us to an incredibly well crafted post-dubstep groover, populated with a splash of think breaks thrown in for good measure. Pushing dreamy chords and a more than hefty baseline to match, we are more than excited to be kicking off the release with this one :)

Bristol based Nuboid has hit the ground running this year, with a segment of his massive collection of productions finally being put out into the world. A talented radio host as well as producer, his contribution to the release is the moody, omnious, breakbreat track “In a Tense City.”

Bringing us to our twentieth release we have an NHS newcomer with their first ever EP, named Yotah, Offering up four tracks that teeter on the fringes of chunky maximalism and intricate, evolving modulation. ‘Rewiring’ is an exploration of hybridized and amorphous sonics into recognizable patterns, only to break through this consolidation (so evidently true to our nature) to peer into the unknown that lurks on the other side.

Such a notion is further established through the creative process that Yves pursued to develop his first body of work; learning and unlearning various styles of music to be left with a semblance of what was. His sound, not yet fully established as he humbly states, is always a vestige of the past, whispers of a previous set of patterns he has reinterpreted and rewired in his own mind.

Premiere: Cocktail Party Effect ‘The Police Took My Garden Away’

The third entry into our Crux singles series comes from Circular Square, currently one of Brussel’s secret gems, but clearly on the verge of blowing up. Circular Square’s seemingly natural skill at crafting exciting interzones of bass-heavy club acrobatics and melodic realms, prime his productions for both adventurous dancefloors and deeper home immersion.

As the central piece, 3-HT-(xon) finds an equilibrium between its surgical drum stitches, swaths of glassy chimes and rapturous flutes. That balance tips a bit as lush, almost pastoral elements come to the fore half-way through, before the drums regain their ground.

Swiveling hi-hats surround a mighty, prowling bass on GBS_02x, an expertly crafted minimalist and stealthy pouncer, that successfully wrings every last drop of momentum out of its carefully selected components. As an addition, Leese’s snakey flip reconstructs its stagger into a rolling parade of tribal percussion, intermittent vocal stabs and cavernous drop-outs, mastering the fine art of remixing that is true to the original, while still bearing the unmistakable handwriting of the remixer.
