Rojin Sharafi, a Tehran-born, Vienna-based sound artist, performer, and composer, fuses raw and abstract emotions with electronic elements that emulate acoustic sounds. Her distinctive musical language intertwines acoustic elements, replicating electronic textures and vice versa, resulting in a synthesis of resilient yet vulnerable and honest sonic expressions.
Using a mix of analog, acoustic, and augmented instruments, alongside custom-designed digital tools, Sharafi gained recognition for her debut album, "Urns Waiting to be Fed," described as “one of [2019’s] most ecstatic and fiercely original hours of music” by The Quietus. Following this success, she released "Zangaar" in 2020 and "Kariz" in 2021. In 2023, Sharafi, together with her band members from HUUUM, published their debut album—an exploration of folk futurism.

SONIC AGENCY - ROJIN SHARAFI - "Those Wild Whispers"

John Wells, a revered figure in the Bristol rave scene, has long been hailed as a local hero, delivering electrifying sets blending Jungle, Acid, and Hardcore with an unparalleled energy. However, in his latest musical venture, he offers a fresh perspective on his journey. While maintaining his trademark robust production, John shifts his focus towards melancholic yet playful melodies, super-funky basslines, and peculiar alien sounds, steering away from the gabber kicks and amen breakbeats.

Having previously released two albums, "Talkin' Macheens" and "Antisocial," on the esteemed https://soundcloud.com/concrete-collage label, along with a string of self-released analogue braindance albums, John's arrival on our roster is met with nothing but excitement.

Step into the shadows of ancient mysticism as Llyn Y Cwn, the maestro of Welsh dark ambient, unveils the mesmerising odyssey that is "Megaliths". Ben Powell has crafted a sonic voyage that mirrors the sacred spaces marked by stoic pillars of rock, each track representing a specific site. Delving deep into the esoteric significance of stone circles, the album portrays these structures not merely as historical relics but as religious ceremonial sites where the veil between our world and the eternal realm becomes tantalisingly thin.

Extracting ambient soundscapes from burial chambers, Ben has utilised convolution reverbs to replicate the ominous ambiance of these ancient spaces. A veteran of stone circle exploration, Ben's decades-long journey has yielded field recordings that capture the haunting whispers of wind and the solemn caws of crows, enveloping the listener in a ghostly atmosphere that transcends the ordinary.

Guided by the wisdom found in Julian Cope's "The Modern Antiquarian" and Aurbrey Burl's "A Guide to the Stone Circles of Britain", Llyn Y Cwn embarks on a sonic pilgrimage across the country, exploring the remote bleakness of these sites. The album transitions from the cramped, gloomy chambers of tombs to the unroofed, wide rings - a journey from darkness to light, from the dead to the living, and from the grave to the sky.

"Megaliths" is a ritual, a sonic séance that beckons listeners to commune with the ancient energies that saturate these sacred circles - an atmospheric descent into the heart of mysterious realms, where the boundaries between the earthly and the spiritual blur into an indistinguishable, haunting atmosphere. üτεm3κ is back with the first show of 2024. My next guest is Suvelina, one of the masterminds behind the bubblegum hardcore club night series Speedrun. She carfted a cinematic and introspective mix with ever-evolving flourescent synths, broken and heartbroken vocals, celestial echoes, sudden outbusts of bass and deconstructed beats, finding a common thread among genres like field recording, ambient trance, spoken word, post-club and hyperpop. Super light and extra heavy, human and post-human, it's a journey of emotions trough sound, akin to reading entries from an abandoned diary. Besides djing, vjing, graphic design, and event organizing, Suvelina is also a craftsperson of extraterrestrial candle holders under the moniker Euromud.

Recording today of a container full of thousands of Maggots squirming in wet mud. I buried two H2a-XLR hydrophones below the surface (in the mud), and placed two DPA-4060 Lav microphones on the top surface and let the maggots call all over the place. All 4 channels are unprocessed, unedited 24bit-96khz captured with a Sound Devices recorder.

Bat field recordings from a recent trip to the North GA mountains. This sound clip was captured using the Anabat SD2 - Bat Detector - high microphone. This device allows you to monitor the ultrasonic echolocation calls of bats for species identification and activity measurement. The particular species of bat in this recording are the Indiana Bat. The typical hearing range of this bat is between 20hz - 150Khz. They locate their prey by means of echolocation. They will produce a very, loud short sound and assess the echo when it bounces back. The type of insect and how big it is can be determined by the quality of the echo and time it takes for the echo to rebound. They also use two frequency types; constant frequency (CF) and frequency modulated (FM) calls that descend in pitch. Each type reveals different information for the bat. The CF is used to detect an object, and the FM is used to provide information regarding the nature of the object and its distance. The pulses of sound produced by the bat last only a few thousandths of a second with silences between the calls that give time to listen for the information coming back in the form of a echo. I was amazed at how complex some of these  echolocation patterns looked on a sonogram and was even more blown away by how they sounded. This file was outputted from the Anabat software application which takes the bat calls and converts them to wave files. The Anabat software application also converted the calls to a audible human hearing range (20hz-20khz) as most of the bats calls went up into the 150khz range.
