Trevor Cox, Professor of Acoustic Engineering at the University of Salford and author of Sonic Wonderland, has discovered the world record for the ‘Longest Echo’. The 1970 Guinness Book of Records is the last claim for the ‘longest echo’, when the solid-bronze doors of the Hamilton Mausoleum in Scotland slammed shut, it took 15 seconds for the sound to die away to silence. In researching his new book Sonic Wonderland: A Scientific Odyssey of Sound Trevor Cox discovered a place where the sound echoes around for a full minute longer, smashing the previous record.

Trevor Cox travelled to the oil storage complex at Inchindown, near Invergordon, Scotland. These reservoirs supplied the naval anchorage in the Cromarty Firth at the bottom of the hill. The tanks were constructed in great secrecy amid concerns about the strengthening of Germany’s armed forces during the 1930s and the threat posed by long-range bombers, which is why the tanks were dug deep into the hillside. The vast complex took three years to complete. His guide was Allan Kilpatrick, an archaeological investigator for the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland.

Trevor had to enter the tank through one of the 18 inch diameter oil pipes because there are no doors. The tank could hold 25.5 million litres of fuel and has walls 45cm thick. The space is about twice the length of a football pitch, 9m wide and 13.5 metres high.

Allan fired a pistol loaded with blanks about a third of the way into the storage tank, and Trevor recorded the response picked up by the microphones about a third of the way from the far end. This is a standard technique used in concert hall acoustics; old black-and-white photographs show a gun being fired on the stage of the Royal Festival Hall when they tested the acoustics back in the 1950s.

Multi 6-channel field recording of a Jacobs ladder also known as the (high voltage traveling arc) which is a device for producing a continuous train of large electrical sparks that rise upwards. The spark gap is formed by two wires, approximately vertical in position but gradually diverging from each other towards the top in a narrow V Shape. When high voltage is applied to the gap, a spark forms across the bottom of the wires where they are nearest each other, rapidly changing to an electric arc. The sparks can burn through thin paper and plastic and start fires, and contact with the exposed high voltage conductors can be lethal. For this recording I used a Sound Devices 744T/Mixpre-D with the Neumann RSM-191A/S kit microphone recording at the base of the transformer channels 1/2, then two DPA 4060 lav microphones channels 3/4 placed at far left and right positions beside the wire rods to capture a nice wide stereo image between the electrical arcs. The third stereo signal was from the Zoom H6 placed at the source of the the electrical sparks near the bottom of the wire rods. All files recorded at 24-bit-96khz. Free Download

i've spent so much of the month of april away from the studio. two weeks on an amazing trip to japan, one week, upon my return back, pretty much kept out of the studio by construction happening on the deck outside of it. mastering with table saws and boom boxes blaring out the door doesn't work so well. after that, my good friend corey (one half of the band illuha) came to visit for a few days and we were able to immerse ourselves in a, finally, quiet studio to work on some music. perhaps i should have uploaded some of our sounds and tracks during those todays… but today makes up for it.

during our recording sessions we found this particular bell that i have, not really a bell, more of a tube… sounded wonderful when bowed with a viola bow. we used it in one of our recordings.

tonight i brought the tube and bow back out and simply fed it into a looper i created (using vSigX a while back) on the eventide h7600.

this sound is the real-time creation of that loop from start to finish with the bowed tube.

Sound recordings from "Teufelsberg" (German for Devil's Mountain) Listening station Berlin Germany. Short excerpts from the high tower dome trying to capture the most amazing spatial reverb echos from this most unusual structure.Various impacts, glass breaks, wooden clanks recorded at 24-bit 96kz with a Zoom H4N. Note: that some distant birds and wind can be heard through some of the recordings. This was due to some of the small holes in the ceiling structure, allowing some slight outside bleed.

In physics, mass–energy equivalence is the concept that the mass of a body is a measure of its energy content.
This concept states that mass is a property of all energy and energy is a property of all mass, and the two properties are connected by a constant: the speed of light. To Einstein, mass–energy equivalence is a consequence of the relativistic symmetries of space and time.
In "Mass & Energy", thus, this concept is explored musically.
The interactions between sound material and the musical structures are a consequence of the 'energy' of the musical gesture. And, as a consequence, the spatial localization of the sounds reflects the intensity of this interactions.
This work was created at CIME - Centro de Investigação em Música Electrónica (Center for Research in Electronic Music), at the University of Aveiro, Portugal.

This work received the Honorable Mention at the Concurso Latinoamericano de Composición Electroacústica Gustavo Becerra Schmidt, promoted by the Comunidad Electroacústica de Chile CECh, in the year 2012.
