In the roots of Earth, the spirits of the ancestors dwelled in the mythical land of Hawaiki, which, in ancient Polynesian meant “spirit world” or “underworld”, the place where all Polynesians travelled to once they fell asleep at the end of life in this world.  It was a journey, a crossing over.  It was a place of longing, which called all people.  There is a proverb from the Cook Islands that goes as such:  “Ua po Avaiki, ua ao nunga nei” – ‘Tis night in spirit-land, for ‘tis light in this upper world”.  Another description, coming from Rapa Nui (Easter Island), states “He kaiga iroto I te raa’, iruga!  Ka-oho korua, ka-ui I te kaiga mo noho o te Ariki O’Hutu Matu’a!”, meaning “The island towards the sun, above!  Go, see the land, where King Hotu Matu’a wil go and live!”
The simple scientific reason for all this travel and exploration and migration might simply come from tribal conflict forcing some tribes to flee to safer havens, increasing population and competition for limited island resources, and related factors.  The deeper reason might be more comprehensive.  After travelling and travelling over so many larges stretches of sea again and again, there is something that never leaves the soul.  The memory of the fenua (the homeland) and the deep confident vision of the future lands yet to be discovered.  The past and future live in this very moment.  The island and the boat are both part of the Polynesian identity, and together with the sense of family, kinship, tribe, unity with nature, and spiritual world, including the ancestors who dwell in Hawaiki, form the Polynesian soul, culture, and life.
Shihunova and I both have lived and travelled in Polynesia, including Hawai'i, Tahiti, and New Zealand.  Our time there, each years before we met each other as friends, were similar and profound.  It was a great period of wonder, discover, finding more of ourselves, and understanding history, culture, roots, and the meaning of life.  As we got to know the people who were native to those islands, we found that our desire to go deeper into our own roots was increased.  Our confidence in our ability to travel far and still have the vision burning bright was increased.  Our love of nature and love of family was increased.  We became not just travelers, but spiritual pilgrims and voyagers of the soul.  We knew that, wherever we lived, we brought our ancestors and roots and identity with us.  We carried the flame with us.  We also knew our identity was yet to be formed, as the journeys ahead would shape that identity and new homes would shape that identity.
It would only be fitting that Shihunova and I teamed together to tell this tale of a spiritual voyage from ancestral identities to a new homeland, in a way that signifies a great cosmic circle of life, with the beginning always being one with the end.  It chronicles life on the island, leaving the island, taking the long sea voyage, and at last, arriving at the new homeland.  It is a mystical place of wonder and connectedness to the natural world we live in to the stars to the spirit world in the earth.  This is our story of Hawaiki.  Enjoy the journey!

Ranj Kaler makes his exciting full release debut with ‘Our One Love’. 

Something of a household name now for his incredible work ethic, it might come as a surprise to know up until 2020, Ranj was just a working DJ in the heart of London content to play other people’s music. But then upheaval - the pandemic - a time that brought sea change to many of us in the music industry. 

For Ranj, a moment to reflect and to learn new skills - production - which quickly became signed releases for Saturo Sounds, 64K and Four Candles’ Keep Thinking. His fanbase grew. New fans included John Digweed and Hernan Cattaneo and from his incredible production style, remixes for Hooj Choons, Liaka Sounds and ARRVL, and bigger and better labels were keen to sign him up. 

Successful collaborations with Norman H on Stripped Digital and Fauxplay on Music To Die For have led to his first solo release of the year, and we are over the moon he’s chosen ASTIR. ‘Our One Love’ is a love note to dance music; an obsession decades in the making distilled into audio. 

In original form, synths soar against a strong percussive bedrock and chunky bass. warm sweeps glisten as icy pads rise in the background revealing intricate sonic detail that glitters in the periphery. Heartfelt and deeply emotional, this is Ranj unencumbered and in full mastery of his skills. 

On remix duties, crowd favourite Silinder makes a welcomed return to the fold honing the emotive elements of the original into his remarkable, unmistakable style, while label head Real Gone Kid takes a break from, uhh, breaks to drop a deep house vibe thick with soul.

I have not been able to recover access to my other account [https://soundcloud.com/ha-kekong] for a couple of years.  I have tried a few times to get back into it but SoundCloud doesn't trust me.  Same phone number, same email addresses, and they still claim that they can't verify my identity.  I created that account about three years ago as a substitute to my regular account which SoundCloud temporarily closed.  They closed it as part of some upgrade procedure in their system, the result of a bug that affected many accounts, about two years ago.  Since SC did not inform its users I didn't know if that was permanent or not, so I created that other account which I can't access. You can't see it because of the angle with which I took the shot, aiming down, but beyond those blocks is the sea.  To the left is the Mediterranean, to the right is the Atlantic Ocean.  No it's not Gibraltar, but a little bit further West. ... Actually I checked recently and it is further North more than West, I thought I was facing South when in fact I probably was facing the Atlantic ocean, which is why I suppose the waves were of a decent size where we were.
