'The Natural Touch'

Analogies of Control is an acousmatic work with a performance facet built in. After the full studio version was mixed, an additional mix was created. A three track work in which all of the non-cello sources (quick freeze metals) are separated and delivered to a performer via headphones. 
In concert the audience hears a tape part of entirely cello and cello derived sounds, and the cellist playing an imitation of the 3rd track. Only the cellist hears the irradiated metals, Consider the cellist a very non-black box. A very coloured speaker, or bio-analogical signal processing, if you will.


03 Skimming

First part of Norfolk Flint. It presents a conflictive relation between repetition (of only a few pitches) of primitive pulsating rhythms, against the singularity of contrasting events: the noisy coloration of some individuals, the scraping attacks, the movement of virtual places in the panoramic dimension.

Prior to the 20th century, and the emergent dominance of equal temperament, the association of emotions with particular musical keys was common practice. 

The Black Glass Ensemble recently revisited this historical alignment of sound and emotion to offer a brief ‘embrace’ in B Minor - the key associated with patience. 

The initial embrace, featuring the 8 musicians of the Black Glass Ensemble and guest Colin Potter, with whom they had been due to perform prior to the Covid19 lockdown, was well received. Consequently, Black Glass sought to widen the reach of their embrace to other musicians to make a more comprehensive piece of work.

The response was unprecedented. 104 musicians returned 247 individual musical tracks to be mixed into this present arrangement.

The full 38’ 50” minute work, “Be Mine in Patience: an Embrace in B minor” is made freely available in the sole hope that this extended embrace may help in some small way to nurture strength, fortitude and comfort.

     Nance is a composer, a free improvisor on trumpet, and a classical guitarist. As a composer he looks for movement through the membrane that connects the self and surrounds (the organism and environment) to ferret out the energies and materials to use for sculpting sound. Sound is regarded as plastic and he treats his music as a plastic art, akin to sculpture, painting or film. It is a focus on listening that connects improvisation to acousmatic composition. In an attempt to unify acousmatic and instrumental music his compositions for performers replace their written scores with aural models that are imitated as closely as possible, thus bringing the performer into an acousmatic listening situation.
