There's so little information about this amazing renga poet that I decided to share another poem written by him. This one is part of a longer sequence, written in 1463:

Only the moon remains
floating in the memory upon
Kinokawa River—
pale glistening waves,
the blank wake of drowned men.
 
About this poem, the author said: "Among the hundreds and thousands who have drowned and perished in this river
due to the disorders in this province were those whom I knew in former days. Often
I would walk along the river, gazing at the moon."

Shinkei (1406-75) was a renowned renga poet and critic, best known for his two-part work "Sasamegoto" (Murmured Conversations). From a group project inspired by a text by Yoko Ono, originally published in her book Grapefruit, 60 years ago, back in 1964.

Recorded, mixed and mastered on 25 Apr 2024 by Jim Lemanowicz at Blissville Electro-Magnetic Laboratories of Massapequa. This was also Day 1364 of the 100 Day Project.

For Disquiet Junto #disquiet0643, we were asked to create a piece of music inspired by a line of poetry from Yoko Ono: "Take the sound of a stone aging". Thus was born an ancient city, a blasphemous ruin of basalt, constructed at angles that defy geometry. We hear it rising from a raging ocean.

The unsettling whirring sound is a sample of a replica prehistoric stone woer-woer, or bullroar. The bell-like tapping is quantized but otherwise unprocessed field recordings of the "ringing rocks" in Buck County, Pennsylvania: so-called "sonorous stones" that ring like bells when struck with a hammer. One of the pads is based on a sample of my own voice. All of the ocean sounds (except in the outro) were created capturing a live performance of high- and low-pass filter sweeps on a pitched-down white noise source.

Best enjoyed with speakers with good bass response.

Before the vocals, before words gave it direction, there was already a shimmer waiting to be uncovered. A sound that carried the mountain’s essence before even being there – as if the music itself had foreseen the journey.

The instrumental version is that premonition. The unspoken heart of Shimmer – instinctive, timeless, and shaped by silence, horizons, and emotions that existed long before I realized them.

If the vocal version is the voice that lifts, this instrumental is the whisper that dreamed it first.
