I love the Like A Dragon series and I wanted to celebrate this Christmas season with a vocal cover. The mixing is a bit shit, but that’s okay. The vocals are shit also, but we will live. At least it ain’t Toadie bad. The lyrics are a combination of the official translation and a fan one I found in a comment section.

This is my FL Studio cover, remake, recreation, whatever you want to call it, of Last Surprise from the Persona 5 OST.

Last Surprise is perhaps the most iconic track on the entire soundtrack, so I tried my best to take my time and not rush this one out like I tend to do lol.

The string parts were not only difficult to transcribe but they were even harder to produce properly. At first I was using 4 ensemble patches from Tokyo Scoring Strings for the sharp intro strings but it still felt lacking. I ultimately ended up using 3 disparate groups of strings to fill out the virtual orchestra: Tokyo Scoring Strings, Spitfire Solo Strings (playing harmonies), Spitfire Solo Strings (playing lower octaves). It all sounded like a horrible mess at first and for a while I was just smashing my face into the DAW to make it all fit. While I'm never gonna get close to sounding like the live Muroya Orchestra that recorded this track, I think where I've ended up is far from where I started, so I am happy with that.

For some other parts of the song, I took inspiration from the live performances of Last Surprise. On the official OST track for example, there is no clean guitar and the drums don't play hats during the choruses or have as many ghost hits throughout.
