The acclaimed and highly sought-after LP by Hailu Mergia and
the Walias, Tche Belew, an album of instrumentals released in
1977, is perhaps the most seminal recording released in the
aftermath of the 1974 revolution. The story of the Walias band is
a critical chapter in Ethiopian popular music, taking place during
a period of music industry flux and political complexity in the
country. 
Hailu Mergia, a keyboardist and arranger diligently working the
nightclub scene in Addis Ababa, formed the Walias in the early
1970’s with a core group of musicians assembled from prior
working bands. They played Mergia’s funk- and soul-informed
tunes, while cutting 45rpm singles with various vocalists.
While the Walias performed at top hotels and played the
presidential palace twice, their relationship with the Derg regime
was complex, evidenced by the removal of one song from the
record by government censors.
Decades later, Hailu Mergia was surprised to see the album
fetching more than $4,000 at online auctions (it helped that the
most popular of all Ethiopian tunes “Musicawi Silt” appeared on
the record). Now everyone has the chance to listen again—or
for the first time—to this timeless pillar of Ethiopian popular
music.

Freak Terrains at Marfa Myths, March 11th, 2016

Norwegian indie favourites Ludvig Moon present "Cult Baby" - the first single from their upcoming debut album! Incredibly catchy with it's emotions center stage and life-affirming energy counterpointed by lyrics written about dark and difficult times in singer Anders' youth. 

Ludvig Moon want to make "small town-indie" inspired by greats such as Smashing Pumpkins, Prince and the Flaming Lips. A sound that combines the youthful restlessness in the lyrics and where they are now, several years later."Cult Baby" was written quite late in the recording process for their debut album. 

Lead singer and songwriter Anders explains: I wanted the song to reflect the freedom and sense of adventure we felt whilst recording the album. We felt like we could do anything and everything we wanted to do, no holds barred. It was very important to me that this song became fun and uplifting musically, especially since the lyrics are very personal and direct.

On their brand new debut single «Sunshine Crawlers» Norwegian newcomers Haunted Mansions bring warmth and understated confidence to their hiphop-inspired indie weirdness. The Trondheim-based duo's  first offering is full of insistent pop hooks, and is a great introduction to their sound. 

Haunted Mansions namecheck Portugal The Man, Danger Mouse and Gorillaz when asked to describe their music and while those artists have inspired Haunted Mansions it's clear to all that they bring their own flavour to the music as well. 

The song combines old-school hiphop beats, almost shimmering acoustic guitars, textured synths and weird, smoky and infectious vocals to perfection. «Sunshine Crawlers» is seductive in all it’s gloom, mildly psychedelic and strongly melodic, but most of all just really great. 

It’s a song about social injustice, about realizing that the world is blindingly unfair and that there really isn’t that much hope to be found. Still, there are undertones of resistance, a subdued call to arms. The last chorus rises above the gloom and asks «Who’s laughing now» as it perhaps finds an ever so slight glimmer of light in the enveloping darkness of modern society.

Thomas: "We had been flirting with the idea of writing songs and starting a band together for a long time, and it just sort of happened one day. As Vegard was leaving my studio he heard the initial demo for Sunshine Crawlers with no vocals from the hallway, and went back with an old melody of his, that just fit the song. From there everything just fell into place and the song was incredibly easy to complete. It is the first song we wrote together."

Somewhere between doom metal and gloomy post-rock Trond, Kristoffer and Tomas set out to create somethings very different and distinctive you won´t have heard before. Surging bass guitars, distorted layers of tuba and unpredictably heavy drums become sounds so full of haunted bass frequencies that neither body nor soul is left unharmed.  

Sunswitch release their debut album in October 2012 through Norwegian indie label Riot Factory. Mixing and mastering is done by Magnus Lindberg, known from the Swedish band Cult Of Luna. Lindberg has also worked with musical heroes such as Switchblade, Refused and Totalt Jävla Mörker.
