Zombies In Miami - When Your Time Has Gone

With previous releases divided into originals and remixes found on vital labels such as Full Pulp, Emerald & Doreen, Tom Tom Disco, Correspondant, Luv Shack, Golden Soul, and Wonder Stories, Norwegian DJ and producer Jarle Bråthen (SXDNS086) forthcoming EP on Full Pulp Ekspress delivers a powerful single: “Clap Your Hands” is the first of two collaborations between Berlin-based artists J.B. and Hard Ton (SXDNS176 as Wawashi Deejay). Backed by four strong remixes made with love by Rotciv (SXDNS069) and Prins Thomas, the release is the perfect example of how Disco can be perfectly paired with Acid. The concoction is dangerously explosive, though, but the result is definitely worth the risk.

We had the privilege of reviewing one of the remixes by Prins Thomas: His distinguishing “Diskomiks”. The prolific Norwegian artist needs no introduction. All we can possibly try to add is saying he is one of those guys that everybody in the business wants to work with. His insightful interpretation of the original is a groovy beast! Hellish as hell, the characteristic disco & cosmic elements of the Oslo-based legend’s sonority are there: The fat bassline, the trippy synth pads, and the smooth acid layer banded flawlessly together with the always impressive Hard Ton’s unique voice. In a year in which we have been constantly told to wash/disinfect our hands, it’s time to clap them! And hard! The release is one of the best of the infamous 2020, peeps! Trust the dino on this!

With four highly focused and crisp new tracks, Bas Dobbelaer and Vand return to SoHaSo once again. Their Laren EP from last year got high praise from dj’s and lovers of deep, percussive dance music and ZL2 seems to wander down that same and interesting path.
Though some things have changed.

On their new EP the vibe seems more melancholic, more introvert. Might the pandemic and the locked down nightlife have something to do with it?

Or is it perhaps due to Dobbelaer’s new favourite instrument, the Waldorf Blofeld? This small synthesizer combines the technology of today with the analogue vibe of the last century and is a therefore perfect metaphor for the delicate ‘vintage feel productions’ of Vand and Dobbelaer.

In any case, ZL2 is manna for headphone junkies. The condensed kicks on tracks like Nomansland and Runner make way for some excited listening, with beautiful details everywhere in the sound spectrum. Listen how the hi-hats unfold slowly on the blissful off-beat belter Story of Blade. Where a melancholic strings ties it all together.
Once again, youth friends Dobbelaer and Vand made something special together. Let’s hope the clubs reopen soon, because you really want to hear ZL2 on a proper sound system.

Vilnius-based label and platform Electric Shapes starts 2021 with the second volume of its acclaimed compilation series “Unreleased Territories”. Featuring an interesting selection of artists from all over the world, such as Jokios Kultūros, Kolomensky, Tassilo Vanhöfen, Facets, Fabio Me Llaman Soltero (SXDNS187), Neud Photo, Anastasia Zems (SXDNS169), Anatolian Weapons, Volta Cab, Wolfstream, and A-Tweed (SXDNS222), just to name a few, the release invites you to this true musical trip through the depths of this mesmerising concoction of sonorities. 

We have the privilege of reviewing the contribution of one of our favourite producers: Ukrainian Volta Cab, currently based in Saint Petersburg, Russia, is acclaimed not only for his productions but also his live sets. His many an influence allows him to competently flirt with several music genres. This time, he decided to go for something more cosmic and trippier. The melodic bell-like lead allied with the atmospheric pads and the arpeggiated synth layer provided a hell of a theme, definitely one of the highlights of the compilation.  

We finish the review with a beautiful message from the label team: “We really hope you enjoyed this musical trip through different parts of our magical planet. While we’re stuck inside during this crazy pandemic, we wish our music has helped you to escape, at least in your mind and soul. Stay healthy and stay alive!”

Llyr brings his debut EP release on Mesh and the next issue in the 3D Reworks series, following the second binaural experiment by Reid Willis in June ’20.

The 3D Reworks series aims to challenge artists to express their work and expand their creative awareness to enable every listener to experience high-definition immersive audio. The EP comprises three tracks of headphone surround sound, immersive audio at it's most powerful. 

Experience: shifting scenes with trains thundering past; teleportation into a futuristic virtual reality headphone rave; and an escape to a digital dream-like state. Llyr presents music created using a mixture of binaural recordings captured of an eerily daunting present-day London by award-winning sound designer Will Cohen and a series of personal answer phone recordings left for him by Crystal Tassels, a renowned burlesque singer from the Berlin performance art underground

"In keeping with Mesh's 3D Reworks series this was originally conceptualised for headphone listening. I used binaural (‘3D’) recordings and lots of binaural (and other spatial) processing techniques. It should translate fairly well to regular speakers too, but you'll be missing out on some of the fun. I tried to create dense, dynamic mixes with a rich audio environment to explore. The intention is that with repeat listens you can discover different things buried in the music. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed creating it."

"Llyr aka Gareth Williams has been a long-time advisor and tutor of my own work for many years, and demonstrates his breadth of knowledge with this treat of a surround-audio package optimised for headphone listening. I was also excited to see the involvement of award-winning sound designer Will Cohen of 'String and Tins' studio. The result being an enveloping abstracted wander through dream space, beautiful sweeping harmonies, and even a delve into the dancefloor where we get a more centralised punch before returning to the outer edges of sound around our heads. It's a pleasure to hear and get lost amongst, many thanks Llyr.

A life that can only dream That's the sound I made. This track was recorded with a lot of variations. The original and beatless version, an organic version that transforms into a neoclassical mood, and a drone and beat only version. And a drone only take. The original is my favorite, but you can listen to all of them and choose which one you prefer. 
I sincerely hope that the world will soon regain comfort and safety. Always have a smile inside your mask!
