My set from the best fest in the west... The Sunset Campout!!! Held in Belden (up in Northern California along the gorgeous Feather River about 4 hours from SF), it's a truly magical event featuring expertly curated music and art, a cast of just over 1200 creative, friendly music heads, and a gorgeous, river forest landscape that is unparalleled!! There is no place like it on Earth...

2024 was the 30th anniversary of Sunset, and I knew it would be special. I'm still honored that Solar and Galen handed me the reins for what I was affectionately calling "the after party" - Opening the final few hours of the festival on the beach stage (Sunday night from midnight to 1:30am). I've played the campout a half dozen times since they started doing them in Belden (16 years ago???), but this was my first time playing at night on this stage on Sunday so I picked out some of my faves from recent times, as well as a few "Cole Classics" (as a friend described them to me), and aimed to offer a "thank you" to the festival and the ones who put it all together. It's a dancer, moving around from a gospel funk start to a psyche rock ending, featuring artists like Moodymann, Cornelius, Pezzner, Jex Opolis, Flying Mojito Brothers, a few of my new edits and an unreleased Cole Odin original.

For RA.1000, DJ Sprinkles' first mix in over a decade is a powerful meditation on the genocide in Gaza.

Dance music often relies on simple narratives: release, escape, unity. But those narratives can often feel inadequate, and even at times, hollow. Or, as Terre Thaemlitz might bluntly put it, just "shitty."

For her first mix in around 15 years, Terre Thaemlitz AKA DJ Sprinkles, challenges us to think differently. "I felt this 1000th podcast should reflect the moment in which it was made," she told us in her Q&A.

And what is this moment? Every day since Israel's 2023 assault on Gaza began, an average of 28 children have been killed. That's an entire classroom, every day, for over 600 days (at the time of writing). It's a staggering figure that only captures a fragment of the listless cruelty imposed on the strip.

Faced with such a genocide, what can music really do? How political can it truly be?  For their RA.1000, Thaemlitz gives us an unflinching rebuke to the idea that music should provide escapism. The mix weaves ambient fragments and jazz passages, woven around samples from Israeli media and the voices of outspoken Jewish critics like Gabor Maté and Norman Finkelstein. 

The result is not just a protest, but a document of our time. For Terre Thaemlitz, music is never just music. Her RA.1000 serves as a reminder that in an age of relentless suffering, the most political act is to reject the illusion of escape, and search for something greater.

Four primary samples were chosen from the original songs, each exploring different affective elements discovered in the music. Viega created what he called “miniature sound portraits” representing the three different stages of original songs, the past, the present, and the future. What emerged from this phase was developmental journey of the songwriting, revealing a more complex relationship between of AS’s past, present, and future self

Our brother, our friend, our family. This is the last recorded dj set from Navid Izadi at our beloved Sunset Campout 2018. Closing out the Beach Stage on Friday evening from a day of frolicking in and around the Feather River. Navid matured and defined his musical prowess in our community over many years and it was an honor to have him perform several times here. The first mix to go up is in honor of a man with an open heart that poured love into his music and all the people he connected with. We will miss you, your laughter, and infectious smile dearly. Your music and charisma will live on forever in all of us!
