Here's another deep and dark cut from the first session of the year, recorded on 2nd January 2021, and using some wonderful piano soundscapes kindly provided by @anmoku. We also added some great industrial/glitchy drum loops from @fl-souto, while Gillie flew in some horrible guitars Si had recorded earlier to complete the unpleasantness.

Transparent Forms - Nick Ashwood - Cat 010 

Composed in 2022 for Microfest, an annual microtonal festival hosted by Kraig Grady and Michael H Dixon. 

Transparent Forms is Nick’s first group composition following on from his 2020 solo piece Unfolding/Overlay, (Inexhaustible Editions 027). Amanda Stewart wrote in the liner notes to that: “Enfolded in the shifting tones, our ears are at the edge of themselves.” With this new work, he continues this interrogation into the edges of harmonicity and perception. Frequencies from bowed guitar, flute and clarinet burst away from any notion of a stable lattice to reshape our understandings of intervals and chords, and our listening is continually surprised and delighted by the 'tastes' and 'colours' that are revealed. 

The instruments dissolve into each other to create an unrecognisable timbral unity where melody emerges from harmonic clouds.

Yuzu Extract

Based on Nemtsov's 2016 opera "Sacrifice" this suite was written and premiered by Klangforum Wien on December 12th,  2022 in Konzerthaus, Vienna. The final movement captured here from the premiere, is a lyrical conclusion to the whole suite featuring the electric guitar as a musical protagonist. I vividly recall the joy of playing the part with its rich microtonal harmonies and tactile textures as it bridged between the musical material coming from the ensemble and the electronics.

NIBURU

Last week I went back to the meadows/wetlands near my home to make another overnight recording. This time I brought a bigger and more quiet rig - Lewitt LCT 540S in NOS and a Sound Devices MixPre 3 II recording at 32 bit float 192Khz. I left it there from 10.30 PM until 8 AM. The location was a bit different from the previous recordings I made here  - I moved further inlands and somewhat closer to the bigger lake - found a spot (you can see it on the track image) with low brush and high grass where I could hide the rig. I used a camouflage net to cover some of the obvious light grey fur on the Blimps
I edited the 9hours+ into this - little less than an hour excerpt - with samples of the evening, night and morning. 
Several places in the recording you’ll hear something snoring (it’s pretty obvious 20 minutes in - right after something walks close by the mics) - and it isn’t me, I was in my own bed nowhere near the rig… It could be a deer or?? The cows on the pasture is to far away, so something else. 
Apart from someone sleeping you’ll hear Cranes, Herons, Geese, Tree frogs, Grasshoppers, Sedge Warbler, Black Birds, Pheasant, and much more. I edited out traffic - both ground and sky - there’s some distant man made sounds here and there that I left in, not too use to much eq - I took out a bit of low end 
Again I’m amazed how much sound there is throughout the night…
