Born aboard a marine life research vessel some 137 miles off the coast of East Falkland, Roberdo Raval did not learn the piano when he was young.

For many years it looked like this young fellow with his wondrous multilingual twang would become an Olympic swimmer... or maybe a maker of fine shoes?

Things took a crucial turn in 1999, when mushroom magazine’s Xmas contest asked the readers for their most visionary festival ideas. Roberdo Raval wrote up the concept for an all solar powered open air – which won him the first prize: A Numark CDN-22 double DJ CD player.

Over the next 20 years he did quite a few of those things he had dreamed to do as an aspiring newcomer DJ: Roberdo Raval played at Fusion Festival, at Boom Festival's Dance Temple and Alchemy Circle, high up on the cliffs of an Atlantic archipelago and at the hind end of the Australian outback.

With more and more old hands lamenting about the ever increasing commercialisation and social-mediasation of the scene, Roberdo Raval ran away from it to spend substantial amounts of time in, on and around great bodies of salt water.  He's making a living as a journalist and writer. 

Go figure.

Surprise Chef’s music is based on evoking mood; their vivid arrangements utilize time and space to build soundscapes that invite the listener into their world. The quintet’s distinct sound pulls from 70s film scores, the funkier side of jazz, and the samples that form the foundation of hip hop. 


Hailing from just outside of Melbourne, Australia, their first two albums, All News Is Good News and Daylight Savings amassed a die-hard fanbase and brought their sound from their home studio to every corner of the globe. The band is now signed to Big Crown Records, joining a lineage of contemporary and classic sounds that have influenced Surprise Chef’s music since their formation in 2017.


Surprise Chef’s self proclaimed “moody shades of instrumental jazz-funk” encompass punchy drums, infectious keys, rhythm guitar you might hear on a Studio One record, and flute lines that could be from a Blue Note session; but when you step back and take in the entirety of their sound and approach, you’ll hear and see a group greater than the sum of its parts.

Inspired by the moody soundtracks of 1960s and 1970s film composers such as Francois de Roubaix, Brian Bennet and David Axelrod, The Offline releases atmospheric, soulfully visual tunes with dramatic Library-music-esque cinematic arrangements.

In these times of endless sonic possibilities streaming out your computer 24/7 comes the idea of putting away the screen and going back to the beginning, with an analogue feel reminiscent of old funk and jazz albums you’d often found sampled in hip-hop, The Offline delivers songs that capture the feeling of a cool summer soundtrack.
