PROGRAM NOTES
Although percussionists are often called upon to mimic the sounds of nature with their instruments, I think that nature, without question, provides the most exciting percussive sounds. In Stealing Thunder, I attempt to honor Mother Nature by appropriating (or stealing) recorded sounds of thunder and integrating them into the work. Each percussionist plays unique solo lines and motives. As the work progresses, the players take motives from one another and modify them. In effect, they are stealing each other’s thunder. The name "Stealing Thunder" is derived from the expression "to steal someone’s thunder," an expression that means to hinder or thwart someone.

In an abstract sense, this work is inspired by the great drum solos and styles of Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Tito Puente, Neil Peart and Billy Cobham. This work is also influenced by rudimentary drumming (i.e. "marching drumlines") and percussion technique books I used when I was younger, such as George Stone’s Accents and Rebounds.

Not, and this marks its artistic profile, not additively, "side by side". Ullip combines these functions in order to let a new something emerge from them. CDs whose tracks do not preserve and reproduce "played music" as is usually the case. But CDs where the music is created by editing, mixing and recording it "on the fly". The CD as an audience, so to speak. With the great advantage that - in contrast to live sessions - one can enjoy the cuts of the CDs over and over again.
Based on a rich musical experience and an almost "wild" past, Ullip - together with other musicians - has today found a style that activates and inspires a special genre:

'Chained music'.

Sounds and pieces, music and rhythms that are played in a self-inspiring way or created on technical devices. Born in the moment, just like jazz. Also, not only as in jazz, given as a theme, otherwise improvised. Above all, they are not reproductions in the sense of notated notes. All the elements that stand between the first beat and sound of a live gig, a studio recording and the final burning process on a CD are interlinked to create what the "piece" recorded on silver discs ultimately is.

Named Composer of The Year by the Classical Recording Foundation at Carnegie Hall, Paterson is the winner of the Alfred I. DuPont Award, and his opera Three Way won the Grammy® under Best Classical Producer of the Year. His music is often a Best of the Year pick on National Public Radio. His orchestral tone poem, Dark Mountains, regularly airs on NPR’s Performance Today. Three Way premiered with Nashville Opera, then BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music), and across the United States. Minnesota Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra, The Oratorio Society of New York, Buffalo Philharmonic, Albany Pro Musica, Albany Symphony, Musica Sacra, Austin Symphony, Vermont Symphony, and ensembles worldwide perform his works. An independent casual pianist and a music artist who loves to create gentle melodies of a song, with the piano as my first musical instrument. 

I started my music journey with a classical piano teacher from 2010-2014. During these years I improved my hand coordination and finger dexterity for my piano playing, as well as learning the techniques in classical piano that would be useful for my later years in terms of piano playing.

After that, I joined a jazz piano school from 2014 to 2016 to learn more contemporary music pieces. I learned more in improvising my own style to the piano. I learned some basic foundations as well that allow me to play basic beginner-level jazz music.

From 2016 to 2019, I have been playing an electronic keyboard with a music band in a local church in which most of the dominant genre is rock, and also acoustic music in a Christian community at my university. I occasionally play the electronic keyboard solo as well during the worship session of the church. Here I experienced live collaboration with my bandmates as well and learned to play music on wide audiences. I learned how different musical instruments have different purposes and different textures to the overall music. 

From 2019 to 2020, I have been spending my years discovering several genres of music that suit my taste and finding my personal branding. I explored and listened to different styles during these years. These include heavy metal, EDM, a-cappella, and many other genres that I have not listened to actively before. This also includes learning the basics of music production and the general components that made up a piece of music.

Now, in the late 2020s, I started my journey by covering some of the songs I find it touching to the heart and moves my emotion. I started my music production and cover in SoundCloud as my first stepping stone. I’m planning to create music that touched the emotions of people intimately.

Karl Kim is a man of many musical hats (perhaps too many for his own good, but that's a discussion for another time). 

​​His musical journey started off with piano lessons at age six, and from there he has picked up many other instruments over the years, including but not limited to: violin, guitar, trombone, and various percussion instruments. Karl was also just as quick to branch out to styles of music other than classical; most significant of these styles is rock and metal (especially of the progressive variety), but jazz, EDM, experimental music, and folk music from various parts of the world have also played a role in shaping him as a musician. 

As a concert music composer, these musical experiences, especially those as a metal guitarist, are what make up the voice that he projects into his compositions, especially in recent times. Pieces like "The Jury is Sleepless", "Without a Minute to Spare", and "So Cold, So Dark, So Chaotic" exist at a crossroads between music for the concert hall and music for the mosh pit. His music has been performed by ensembles such as the Rhythm Method, S.E.M., and Bearthoven, and he holds a B.M. in Music Theory and Composition from New York University. 

"Karl with a K" is an alter ego of Karl Kim. Karl with a K, while having the same musical background as Karl Kim, draws upon a fascination for rhythm game music that started with Dance Dance Revolution at the age of eight, and grew considerably to encompass games including, but not limited to, Sound Voltex, In the Groove, beatmania IIDX, Voez, and Arcaea. Karl with a K brings his background in metal and 20th century classical music into rhythm game original tracks such as "!CAUTION! small but deadly", "BELLUM", and "rudimentary methods of overkill", which can be characterized by plenty of guitars, unusual rhythms, and sometimes non-instruments being used as instruments. Much of his output as Karl with a K is written for the purposes of Stepmania simfile creation (though as of BMS of Fighters: EighTeen's "0verfl0w_err0r" this is no longer exclusively the case).

Karl Kim currently resides in Bloomington, Indiana where he is pursuing an M.M. in Music Scoring for Visual Media at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. Karl with a K can be seen lurking around the internet (especially specific Discord servers), occasionally not being above a good meme from time to time. In addition, Karl with a K is working on his first project as a game developer, a typing meets rhythm gaming fusion titled "glyph;".
