fabric 88 Promo Mix - Ryan Elliott

What stands Marcel Fengler apart, as well as his knack for refined atmosphere, is his widescreen vision: he reaches for records from all across the electronic spectrum and from throughout the ages. His official mix for Berghain proved that, snaking as it did through a number of different moods and grooves, but all with a sense of cohesion that betrays his many years behind the decks. As a producer, too, he has amassed an assured body of work on Ostgut Ton in both LP and EP format that is fantastically functional. 

The mix Fengler has put together for us is a high impact hour of firmly rooted rollers embellished with spooky synths and knotted acid, kinked drum lines and insistent claps. Always on a smooth upward trajectory, it is a mix that you can feel transporting you to another realm and one that manages to balance punishing passages with airier moments of trance inducing atmosphere. As such it packs a lot in, but never feels rushed, and leaves you desperate for more.

This morning I find myself sitting in a nearly bare office, which was once the headquarters of Headphone Commute for the last five years, as I prepare to depart this country and move on to London, hopefully for the better times. This is the last mix published from the United States (for now), and I’m happy that it will be by Roel Funcken, a friend and a confidant in various genres, whom I will be closer to, once I’m on the other side of the pond. This is the fourth installment in a six-part series that spans nearly 12 hours in length (please find the earlier sections on Roel’s page, linked below), and I’m honored to partake in this journey, as it fits neatly into my own virtual and physical, transatlantic, commute. Drone veteran Creation VI (Russia) presents us with his debut album on Cryo Chamber. 

The cold wind howls outside the warm yurt, the shaman inside prepares the pipe. The inhale is deep. With the exhale he starts throat singing. The smoke dances between drums and bells raised by the rest of the tribe. Sweaty face sway and glazed eyes blink in rhythm with the beat. 

This album is a journey of us humans moving through the ages in our universe. Trying to figure out our place within it as we forge myths and philosophies. Build megaliths and temples. Send our prayers into space and bide our time waiting for the miracle. 

Recorded on old tapes for a fuzzy warmth. This album uses a lot of acoustic instruments like blockflute, chinese flute (hulusi), shruti-box, harmonica, ocarina, kazoo, bells, chimes, seeds & seedpods. The Arpeggiator

Roel Funcken officially popped up on the scene in 2010, with his solo debut, titled Vade, out on Ad Noiseam. But fans of electronic music, and IDM in general, have been tracking this Dutch musician for over a decade prior, when, along with his brother, Don, the duo has released some of the genre defining music on labels such as Djak-Up-Bitch, Schematic, Sublight Records, Neo Ouija, n5MD , Arcola (Warp) as the one and only Funckarma. In 2009 the Funcken brothers kicked off their very own, digital-only, Funcken Industry imprint, which hosted a few of their other projects and offshoots, such as Shadow Huntaz, Scone, Quench, Automotive, and the latest from Roel's solo works. Roel continues to influence the evolution of music through numerous releases (Sapper Morton on Analogical Force, Semtinal Convex on Methlab and Prester Hynn on his own imprint to name a few) and active engagement in the community, with music festival curation, mixes on mixlr and soundcloud and weekly playlists on Soundcloud and spotify. Roel's music is advanced in sound design, often incorporating unique experimentation in electronic sound, with cut-up, twisted, atmospheric sonic soundscapes, leaving the cranium always begging for more. His ambient textures maintain a cinematic quality throughout, while his percussive arrangements retain a constantly mutating framework, always reconstructing its rhythm and structure, contradicting complex configurations and minimal design.
