The Devil You Know

Une invitation à parcourir l’Altiplano Potosino, région désertique du Mexique au-dessus de San Luis Potosi, à 400 km au nord de Mexico. Sur ces hauts plateaux à 2000 mètres, le désert est loin d’être vide. On entend les habitants des villages et des hameaux, les bergers avec leurs troupeaux de chèvres ou de moutons. On part à dos d’âne ou en calèche pour aller charruer les champs. Entre cactus et arbustes, des vaches cherchent quelques brins d’herbes. De retour au village, on se retrouve tous à l’église et à la fête locale. Les coyotes chantent en écho au train qui traverse l’immensité de ce “désert” mexicain peuplé de vies et de sons.

Desierto

Myriam et Caroline ont quitté leurs pays respectifs pour des raisons politiques. Le Maroc en 1967 pour Myriam en tant que juive après la guerre des 6 jours, et la Chine pour Caroline au début des années 90 après le massacre de Tian’an men. L’une était encore adolescente, l’autre passionnée par la langue française. Tout aurait dû bien se passer pour elles en France, et pourtant, elles l’ont quittée en espérant des jours meilleurs au Canada.

Ils et elles ont quitté leur pays pour la France avant de choisir de s’installer au Canada. Ils et elles nous racontent la France, son accueil, ses opportunités, mais aussi ses blocages. Après leur expérience française ils ont finalement atterri à Montréal, Ottawa ou Vancouver, où Halima Elkhatabi les a rencontrés. Après la Route du Bled, Halima Elkhatabi tisse avec finesse onze récits qui racontent un double exil avec émotion et lucidité. Une coproduction ARTE Radio - Radio Canada qui permet de passionnants regards croisés sur la France et la Canada.

La route de l'Eldorado (4/5) : La valse de l'exil

Pendant des décennies, les personnes analphabètes de ma famille se sont enregistrées sur des cassettes afin de communiquer avec leurs proches en France. Ma mère et moi venons de retrouver une K7 audio datant de 2004, glissée dans une enveloppe qui n’a jamais été ouverte. Elle l’écoute pour la première fois, dix-sept ans plus tard. Nous étions persuadées qu’elle contenait un message de ma grand-mère. Mais la cassette renferme en réalité un message de la première femme de mon grand-père, yaye Elisa ou "maman Elisa", aujourd’hui décédée. Ma mère semble bien plus émue que s’il s’agissait de la voix de sa “vraie” maman. Cette découverte surprenante me pousse à échanger avec elle sur la polygamie, mais aussi sur l'importance de l'oralité et de la transmission dans notre famille partagée entre France et Sénégal. Ma mère, comme beaucoup d'immigrés, a mené une double vie entre deux continents. L’écoute de cette cassette réactive une mémoire de l’immigration : une arrivée en France douloureuse et l’amour des siens laissés au pays. (Emilie)

Sex and sounds (n°25) : Comme des bêtes

I want you to conjure an image in your mind of the white stripes that divide the lanes of traffic going the same direction on a major highway. How long are the stripes and the spaces between them? 

You can spread your arms out to estimate if you want to.

Over the course of many years, a psychology researcher named Dennis Schafer at Ohio State asked students from many different parts of the country this question and the most common response was that the white stripes are two feet long.

Tom Vanderbilt, author of the brilliant book Traffic: Why We Drive the Way We Do (and What It Says About Us), reveals the real answer and some of the other perceptual countermeasures that are designed to make you feel comfortable going way faster than your brain can adequately process. 

We also talk about how this design language of exaggerated scale and wide vistas is great for limited access highways, but it’s problematic when these features are grafted onto suburban landscapes where they don’t belong.
