Turbo Sud is back with a special guest mix by @canti_magnetici, an underground record label based 'somewhere in South Italy', founded in 2015 by Gaspare Sammartano, Andrea Penso, and Donato Epiro. 

Canti Magnetici is a project that began a decade ago when all three founders lived in Puglia, in the South East of Italy. As Donato recounted to me, in those days, they used to meet at Andrea's trullo, (a traditional Apulian dry stone hut with a conical roof) in Ostuni, to discuss music, shape the vision for the label, assemble tapes, and cook together.

Curated by Donato Epiro (@donatoepiro) and Gaspare Sammartano (@flashflood_g), now the sole founders continuing the project, the show will take you through the label's distinctive catalogue, which explores natural and cultural phenomena, states of being, and scientific ideas through unconventional sounds, words, and imagery. Expect a variety of ambient, industrial noise, tape music, spoken words, experimental Electronic music, or a field recording recorded in Aliano (Matera, Basilicata) and released as part of "Carnevale di Aliano (Uscita delle Maschere Cornute)" in 2021.

Donato Epiro is a biologist, composer and musician, working with a mixture of influences in which electronic scores made up of sounds from online archives, videos, tapes, samples, and acoustic, analogue and digital instrumentation are intertwined with ecological, anthropological and fantastic themes. 

Gaspare Sammartano is an underground musician and soundmaker. His solo work involves gathering and manipulating tapes and reflecting on the evolution of modern sampling techniques.

A new guest mix by Donato Epiro and Gaspare Sammartano, who run @canti_magnetici, the South Italian label already featured in the February episode. This special broadcast has been programmed in response to Holy Week, as it includes traditional funeral music from the Holy Week processions in Taranto.

In 2022, on Holy Friday, Canti Magnetici released a tape entitled Musica Lacrimosa, not credited to any artist. Behind this title, which references the text of the Stabat Mater, lies a collection of funeral marches from the tradition of their hometown, Taranto, performed by band ensembles during the processions (Misteri) commemorating the passion and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

At the time, the label offered no information about the music on the tape, limiting itself to a mention of Taranto, a photograph of the city’s port after the bombing on the night between 11 and 12 November 1940, and the recording date, 1974. It was their clear intention that the work not be perceived as an archival or documentary project. Instead, they hoped listeners would focus solely on the profound drama of the compositions and performances, somehow sounding equally remote and existential due to the nature of the procession marches and the now-deteriorated medium: an amatorial tape of field recordings, whose author remains unknown.

Today, they are presenting the work in an expanded version (which includes 45 minutes of tape recordings and a newly composed 15-minute piece) to share the sadness and sense of inadequacy that, as musicians and curators of an independent record label, they deeply feel in these historical times. Donato and Gaspare hope to create an occasion for reflection: How should art respond to the despair of the present? Especially as we live in a society increasingly accustomed to ever-growing self-referential, individualistic, hedonistic, promotional, and empty-hearted ways of life.

Listening to the decayed remnants of these old funerary compositions becomes for them a way to ponder on who we are as humans and where we continue to go wrong.

Tracking a personal and pivotal moment in his life, Rafael Anton Irisarri’s fateful album A Fragile Geography has shifted meanings from grief to resilience in the ten years since it was released. Irisarri’s mix for Bleep taps back into those initial feelings changed by time, highlighting glistening blankets of sound, gauzy chord sweeps, and romantic bittersweet swells amidst the swathes of blasting, folding harmonic noise. Ryuichi Sakamoto’s dreamily puffing organ chords waltz towards the swaying pendulum of piano on Bohren & Der Club Of Gore’s ‘Maximum Black’, revealing a jazz backing of noir drum shuffles. Mabe Fratti’s voice is soft and billowy like a cloud of perfume on her rework of ‘Hiatus’, dispersed by the privately reflective noise of Ethel Cain’s ‘Onanist’, both airily cushioning and sharply confronting.

“I made this mix for Bleep to celebrate the tenth anniversary and reissue of my album "A Fragile Geography". I structured the mix to mirror how grief moves through us. It's a haze of fragmented memories and emotions, drifting like smoke through dimly lit rooms with memory stained walls. Each song feels like a whispered thought, a fogged-up mirror, or a letter never sent. Some tracks feel soft and distant, while others hit a little harder. Grief doesn’t scream here; it sighs, loops, and lingers. Tape hiss, faint piano, distant voices, and time dissolved strings shape the sound. The dead end road is the first track of the album "The Dead End Road" by Francesco Giannico released by "Silentes" label on 28th nov 2025. 

The road does not end: it abandons us, and in its abandonment it invites us to pause, listen, and wander within what cannot be possessed, only perceived.

"The Dead End Road" is a journey along a road that leads nowhere, immersed in dark and suspended atmospheres - a path that leaves us alone with our listening. Through field recordings and electroacoustic textures, sounds emerge, dissolve, and recombine in restless spaces, between memory and presence.

Each track is a fragment of an inner landscape: a place where silence is not absence but presence, and where the boundary between the real and the imaginary blurs.

Nervous and Abandoned Trails unfolds as a passage through fragile and unsettled paths — routes once marked, now partially erased. The piece moves along sonic traces that hesitate, fracture, and deviate, mirroring the uneasy behavior of memory when it can no longer rely on clear direction.

Built from field recordings, electroacoustic layers, and unstable harmonic figures, the composition advances in short impulses rather than linear progression. Sounds appear abruptly, withdraw, and resurface altered, as if navigating a terrain where orientation is constantly renegotiated.

These trails are not meant to be followed to a destination. They exist as residues: nervous lines drawn across a landscape that has already been abandoned. Listening becomes an act of cautious movement, attentive to micro-variations, silences, and sudden shifts in density.

In this space, tension does not resolve — it persists. The nervousness suggested by the title is not agitation, but heightened awareness: a state of listening sharpened by uncertainty, where each sound carries the possibility of interruption or disappearance.

Video process
The visual counterpart emphasizes this sense of instability and dislocation. Using compressed perspectives and distant focal points, the imagery avoids clear landmarks, favoring partial views and ambiguous depth.
Light and shadow interact in narrow ranges, reinforcing a feeling of suspension and incompleteness, as if the image itself were following an abandoned trail.

The slow pace of the visuals contrasts with the internal agitation of the sound, allowing tension to accumulate rather than release.
