The Expanders are inspired by the music of Jamaica, and we are first-and-foremost fans of the music. Our collection of Jamaican vinyl records spans early ’60s Ska & late ’60s Rocksteady & Reggae, to 70′s Roots and Rockers and early ’80s Roots Radics style. Part of the band’s mission is to expose these sounds to modern-day audiences.

Reggae veteran Johnny Osbourne is one of Jamaica’s best-loved singers with scores of hit tunes from nearly four decades for the likes of Winston “Bam Bam” Riley, Studio One, King Jammys,
Channel 1, Bobby Digital and countless others. His hits span
over 30 years and include “Truths and Rights”, “Folly Ranking”,
“Buddy Bye-Bye”, “Come Back Darling”, 
“Give a Little Love” and “Water Pumping”.

“Black Starliner” was first heard as a Sound System dubplate special, eventually released by Roots Garden to popular demand on 7inch single in 2005(RGR:001). Quickly selling out, the song gained massive air play on radio stations worldwide and became a much sought-after modern day roots classic on the European sound system circuit.

Manasseh totally reworks the original rhythm track for the remix
with more of a contemporary feel, yet with obvious references
to the early 1980’s Roots Radics era of ‘dancehall’ roots hits
mixed by Scientist. Johnny Osbourne’s baritone vocal takes a
fresh approach to the popular repatriation theme by
addressing the issue from a sharper angle:
”you wait for the Black Starliner, and you never want to
go a Africa, you never want to hear the words of Jah Jah,
you never read up the holy scripture, you never respect
one another, and yet your waiting for the Black Starliner?!”
