Gecko Turners fourth album, That Place By The Thing With The Cool Name is a marvelous journey. A globetrotter lifestyle and the opportunity to share experiences with musicians from remote places are the reason for the exuberant worldliness of this album. Gecko Turner released Guapapasea! in 2006 and has been going strong ever since.
 
There is an incredible band playing on the album. Guitarist Rafa Prieto and bass player Dr. Robelto, whose Fender Bass is the backbone of the full sound of the Afrobeatnik Orchestra, have played on most of the tracks, with the participation of musicians from Texas, Nigeria, Brazil, Cuba, Guinea, England and Extremedura, transforming what Gecko once defined as his "soniquete". But despite all these flavours, the album still sounds distinctly like Gecko Turner and comes packed with his unique and unorthodox interpretation of Soul.
 
The songs cross the frontier of an imaginary space, that "imaginary South" that can be found on the Guadiana/Mississippi River, which has its capital in the American deep south and which shares borders with Nigeria, Brazil, Jamaica, Cuba and Latin Harlem. In this imaginary space the spirits of Coltrane and Lou Reed roam freely and proudly make appearances on some of the songs, especially the last two on the album.
 
That Place By The Thing With The Cool Name is not just a brilliant name, it is an overwhelmingly good album, created with the humility that only the very best have.

Lately (Love, Love, Love)

We remember the day our manager came into our studio aka drew's living room apartment to show us this new band he was going to sign to Disruptor Records. The first record he played us was this tune Overload and we were hooked! We had never heard of them before but we proceeded to listen to 10 more songs of theirs and we were blown away. Their sound was so refreshing from the instruments to their vocals. There was a summertime quality to all their music that couldn't be denied. Flash forward a couple months and we had the chance to meet them in LA. We proceeded to do what any dudes meeting for the first time would do, we through a mansion party at a buddies got totally blackout and missed the call time for what was our Let You Go music video. Flash even more forward and Overload is taking over top40 and they are about to drop their next single Dreams! The boys were cool enough to let us take a shot a remixing overload and putting our touch on it. The song itself is already just so amazing and vibey... its like drinking coconut water on a beach while getting a foot rub and someone somewhere else transferring large sums of money into your bank acct. SO we figured why change that and just change the foot rub to a back massage and money to a kiss from a chick you really are into but didn't know she was also into you.... So without further adieu... our remix of Overload!

5) The Hamptons Long Island Police dept purchased a de-commissions Virginia class submarine to be their patrol submarine boat. Its first arrest was a group of teenagers smoking weed and playing rap music on their boat. A high teen said of the arrest by the submarine, 'I have to say, it was pretty cool riding back in that thing, especially being totally baked...'

Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad - War Machine

On March 26th, 2014 the Brooklyn Attractors, including Victor Axelrod, Andy Bassford, Larry McDonald, Brett Tubin, Dan Jeselsohn, Eddie Ocampo, Buford O’Sullivan, Anant Pradhan, Luke Penella, and Rich Graiko came together to play a show at the Shapeshifter Lab in Brooklyn, NY. Thankfully the audio was captured by the crew at Shapeshifter Lab and subsequently made available for release. This became “LIVE IN BROOKLYN”, the ATTRACTOR’S sophomore album and a rare hifi glance into the modern underground NYC Jamaican Jazz scene. The following is the unedited audio from that evening.

I close my eyes and I'm there, on tour with one of the bands that helped start this whole thing. Three guys pumping power and life into thousands of moving bodies. Swarms of beautiful girls swaying. I always dreamed of life on the road. Sweat. Summer. Sex.

My mind flashes. The Green takes the stage. These harmonies are mind-bending. The beat- hypnotic, pulsing. I'm so lucky to be part of this magic.

I open my eyes and head tilted back, I soak up Pepper's new single, "Start You Up" (The Green Version). I finally get my fix. Their 2013 self-titled album kept me pushing forward and since then I've been waiting for someone to take me back. I had been out of the game for two years when I was reintroduced to the scene by two of Hawaii's biggest powerhouses.

Pepper and The Green made me remember why I do what I do. I had forgotten the sound of laughter in a green room- what it's like to travel the country with close friends. They taught me how to tour again.

My gratitude is palpable as I groove to this track. Pepper has teamed up with The Green's Brad Watanabe to create something crisp and fresh, new yet familiar. Something indescribably and uniquely Pepper, with a twist of Green. It gets dirty, flowing through ambiance and dub, before being wiped clean and polished with a shine. Perhaps that's just what comes from putting these two together. IMG_6293

Brad welcomed the collab: "It was awesome to do this remix, I grew up listening to and jamming songs off Kona Town and always looked up to these guys."

As did I, as did all of my friends. Thanks for taking me back. Thanks for the memories of a time when I only dreamed of this life, and of a time when I was brought back to life through this music. Thanks for giving me something to dance to till next tour. I'll meet you at the next party. Catch ya on the road.
