Dixie” was written on a cold rainy March morning in New York in 1859. It was written for a blackface minstrel show, and it quickly became popular in the north. It didn’t take hold in the south until 1861 as the Confederate States searched for their own anthem.

The lyrics were written in the minstrel style, with a thick, comedic Negro dialect. These original lyrics are included in the annotations of the song.

The song was performed at the inauguration of Jefferson Davis as the Confederate States' president, and became the unofficial anthem of the Confederacy. It’s interesting that the song was also a favorite of Abraham Lincoln.

Today the song is often protested as the “Confederate Flag” of music. But the song is what you make of it – you get out of the song what you bring into it.

This is an orchestration I wrote based off of a melody that my roommate, Jennifer McCartin, wrote when she was in 8th grade. I made this for her and it was performed on November 27, 2018 in the TCU Student Composers' Concert. Performers: Elijah Ong (Piano), Santiago Rodriguez (violin I), Deanna Smith (Violin II), Maria Cortez (Viola), Jace Mankins (Cello), Phillip Truitt (Bass), Tommy Mitoraj (Synth I), and Parker Greenwood (Synth II). Conducted by me.

Discovering the Light (Live)

Pan was a lascivious Satyr of the mountains and the God of the Shepherds and the Flocks. His main task was to render the flocks fertile.
Of course, this mythical character relates to a fragment of the human psyche, which if given free rein...often shepherds those under "his" spell through the garden of delights, leaving them to repent at their leisure.

Here is also an attempt a composition in the Dorian Mode.
I don't really know if I even got close.
It was my best guess.

You may notice that the underlying rhythm is 8/8,
while the overlaid melodies are 3/4.
