This piece is either based off of an early childhood memory or a dream, but I can't remember which. We are in a small enclosed space, with a single window. There is a splintering wind pushing against the wooden walls. Golden sunlight filters through the leaves of the surrounding oak trees. Gradually, the wind and the light disintegrate the shelter and we're left suspended in pure space... Okay, that last bit was definitely a dream.

To try and capture this aesthetic, I recorded: wood creaking, wind through trees, wind through grass, fire, the Pacific ocean, double bass harmonics and glissandi (thanks Ilya!), lots and lots of train brakes, a thunderstorm, a kitchen chair being dragged across the floor, my stovetop kettle and a bunch of other things.

This is about trances. Mental states of flow, when conscious thought yields to instinct. I tried to colour it with a neon/synthwave aesthetic, which is something I’ve been addicted to for years. That indulgent retro feel and the idea of an instinctual trance seem to go hand in hand for me.

Deep Space 69 chronicles the misadventures of a transport ship in outer space led by Jay and his Koala, wingman/co-pilot, Hamilton. A send-up to the many humorless sci-fi films and series that take themselves far too seriously, Deep Space 69 treads lightly on space exploration and instead focuses on Jay’s incessant exploits with the fairer sex and Hamilton’s frustration with their foolish missions.

Dawn has so much energy. The air tastes new and the hush of night blooms through a gentle buzz into the messy bustle of day. A delicate moment where emotional peace and ecstatic ambition coexist. Love it.
