Following his latest album Songs Of Love And Decay for Dekmantel, Broken English Club serves a mix of furiously scrubbing bass and strutting and stomping rhythms. The swirling signal scratches of Russell Haswell combined with Sunn O)))’s continuous pummel of guitars are folded into coursing industrial techno beats from Ansome as BEC layers four tracks on top of each other for an intense opening salvo of rhythm and noise. What follows is no less unrelenting: the electricity of Scalameriya zaps and groans like the pulverising kicks and thumps are eviscerating the track’s machinery, and Samuel Kerridge’s ‘Propagates Of Desire’ is an obsidian trip through thorn-riddled electro, with visceral, ominous, foreboding spoken word from Aaron Turner.

It’s back to the strange, mind-expanding world of Zenaari with an episode from Moroccan techno master Chami. Leaving his homeland for France was an epiphany, Lyon the place where his passion for beats kicked-off. Since then, he’s relocated to Berlin and become synonymous with a clean, rhythmic and mentally-focused sound played exclusively on vinyl. It’s raw and unforgiving techno primed for body and soul, Berlin to the letter and a constant dialogue with the city’s ever-changing zeitgeist. Foregrounding burgeoning talents through his and Olivia Mendez’s DIG Curated, playing as half of Face 2 Face with DJ peer OPH, and key figure in Berlin-based collective Minijob (whose calling is in organising underground raves in and around the city), Chami’s plate is more than full. But it’s passion for sound that drives him, visceral basslines his bread and butter. Breaking with the expected, there’s a further facet to his sound, one that occupies the focus of this next Zenaari number: jazz. Not quite as far as it might superficially seem, Chami’s feeling for rhythm and knack for progressively stacked up moods translates flawlessly, but if it helps there’s a few warped percussions to move things along. This is an expert fusion of his musical universe, a Podcast that probes the possibilities offered by the superimposition of these two sonic languages and develops something new in response. Two sides of a coin: Chami’s slamming beats and soothing jazz are a window onto the spectrum of his talents, 68 minutes of compelling sounds from a Berlin mainstay.

Zenaari Mix 020 - Chami

Hailing from the Midlands, electronic producer and dedicated record collector Tommy Austin (born 2003) has long been driven by an unwavering devotion to sound and a deep-rooted urge to create.
Having picked up the guitar at just five years old, the now 21-year-old made the move to London over a year ago, which he credits to his uncle, compelled to chase the musical journey he knew he was destined for. Yet it was only after discovering a handful of transformative club nights - hidden, low-lit rooms pulsing at the fringes of the city - that his path sharpened into absolute clarity. What began as fascination evolved into fixation.

As Horston, he now channels his tireless curiosity into capturing the emotional complexities that lie beneath the surface of his imagination. From brooding atmospheres and rolling rhythms to soundscapes steeped in longing, Horston’s command of his craft radiates with rare elegance and a sheer sense of maturity.

Nu Guinea came together over a love of studio jam sessions. The Berlin based Italians fuse live instrumentals and synthesisers that journey to far corners fo the musical world, from weird disco to exotica, world grooves via ethno rhythms. Their most adventurous work has come in the form of albums on their own NG Records as well as Early Sounds Recordings, one of which found them rewire original Tony Allen drum recordings with their own jazz-funk vibes.

In the mix for us this week they stir up a steamy summer session of boogie bass, township funk and squelchy synth goodness. It’s 90 minutes of storytelling music that speaks of a lifetime of digging deep into local sounds and scenes and stitching them all together with the sort of underlying grooves that transcend boundaries and bring people together under the sun.
